INTRODUCTION TO Gi-Fi
G Gi-Fi or Gigabit Wireless is a transceiver
integrated on a single chip using CMOS
process.
G Allows wireless data transfer up to 5 Gbps.
G Gi-Fi has an operation range of 10 meters.
G Gi-Fi operates on the 60GHz frequency
band.

G Utilizes a 5mm square chip and a 1mm wide

antenna.
G NICTA researchers have chosen 57-64GHz
unlicensed frequency band to develop this technology.

Gi-Fi integrated wireless transceiver chip developed at the National ICT

Research Centre, Australia.

ARCHITECTURE OF Gi-Fi
G The core component of Gi-Fi system is the
subscriber station.
G It supports the standard of IEEE 802.15.3C
which supports mmWave WPAN.
G An 805.15.3C system uses small antenna
at the subscriber end.
G It supports Line of sight operation.

FUNDAMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES IN
802.15.3C
G The mmWave WPAN will allow high

coexistence with all other microwave

systems.
G It transmits multiple signals simultaneously
across the wireless transmission paths
within separate frequencies.
G It uses ultra wide band (UWB) with
High bit rate
High security
Faster data transmission

WORKING OF Gi-Fi
G Uses time division duplex for both

transmitting and receiving.

Data files are converted from IF range to RF
60GHz range.
Then it is feed to power amplifier which
feeds mmWave antenna.
Incoming RF signal is down converted to an
IF and then to normal ranges.
Heterodyne construction is used for this
process to avoid leakages.

WHY 60GHz?
G The mm-wave antenna uses 60GHz frequency

which helps in achieving high data rates.

G 60GHz band has unique characteristics.
G Used for satellite-to-satellite communication.
G The oxygen absorption is high at 60GHz.
G This attenuates 60GHz signals over distance,
so that they cannot travel far beyond their
recipient.

FEATURES OF Gi-Fi
G High speed of data transfer
G Low power consumption
G High security
G Cost effective
G Small size
G Quick deployment
G High level of frequency reuse
G Highly portable

CONCLUSION
G Within five years, we expect Gi-Fi to be the

dominant technology for wireless networking.

G Gi-Fi will develop wireless home and

wireless office of FUTURE.

G Hence Gi-Fi can potentially bring wireless

broadband to the enterprise in an entirely

new way.
