ETHICS?
Every society forms a set of rules that
establishes the boundaries of generally
accepted behavior. These rules are often
expressed in statements about how people
should behave, and the individual rules fit
together to form the moral code by which a
society lives.

DEFINITION

a set of beliefs about right and wrong

behavior within a society. Ethical
behavior conforms to generally
accepted normsmany of which are
almost universal.

 A virtue is a habit that inclines people to do what is acceptable

Eg: Fairness, generosity, and loyalty

and a vice is a habit of unacceptable behavior

Eg: vanity, greed, envy, and anger

Peoples virtues and vices help define their personal value

system

IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRITY
A person who acts with integrity acts in accordance
with a personal code of principles.
One approach to acting with integrityone of the
cornerstones of ethical behavioris to extend to all
people the same respect and consideration that you
expect to receive from others.

MORALS, ETHICS, AND LAWS

Morals are ones personal beliefs about right and wrong
Ethics describes standards or codes of behavior expected
of an individual by a group (nation, organization,
profession) to which an individual belongs
Law is a system of rules that tells us what we can and
cannot do. Laws are enforced by a set of institutions (the
police, courts, law-making bodies).

ETHICS IN THE BUSINESS WORLD

CODE OF ETHICS
a statement that highlights an organizations key ethical
issues and identifies the overarching values and
principles that are important to the organization and its
decision making.
Codes of ethics frequently include a set of formal, written
statements about the purpose of an organization, its
values, and the principles that should guide its
employees actions.

ETHICAL DECISION MAKING

INFORMATION PRIVACY
the right to be left alonethe most comprehensive of rights, and
the right most valued by a free people.
Information privacy is the combination of communications privacy
(the ability to communicate with others without those
communications being monitored by other persons or
organizations) and data privacy (the ability to limit access to ones
personal data
by other individuals and organizations in order to exercise a
substantial degree of control over that data and its use).

RELATIVISM : WHY COMMONSENSE

WONT WORK

Cultural relativism is the simple observation that different cultures employ

different norms (or standards).
Moral relativists argue that all norms and values are relative to the cultures in
which they are created and expressed.

EGOISM VS. ALTRUISM

2 types of Egoism :
Psychological egoism is the thesis that people always act from selfish motives,
whether they should or not.
Ethical egoism is the more controversial thesis that, whether people always act
from selfish motives, they should if they want to be moral.
Altruism argues that the morally correct action always best serves the interest of
others.

STUDI KASUS: VANDALISME ELEKTRONIK

Sebuah organisasi/grup mahasiswa membuat semacam buletin board (BB)
elektronik/forum, dengan menggunakan peralatan komputer dan dana dari
pihak kampus. Forum ini sangat aktif digunakan mahasiswa bahkan
terpublikasi di media nasional. Seiring berjalannya waktu meskipun anggota
tidak terlibat tetapi aktifitas dari forum menampilkan informasi nomer kartu
kredit curian; hate messages ilegal; program/software pada halaman publik
oleh ADUL seorang non member, kemudian banyak didownload dan ternyata
mengandung virus dan menimbulkan kerusakan dan kerugian; program lain
yang diposting untuk mengganggu layanan jaringan, dll.
- bagaimana tanggung jawab anggota mahasiswa dalam hal ini? Tindakan
yang harus dilakukan sebagai member? Tanggung jawab dari kampus,
mahasiswa, dll.
- Bagaimana hak dan tanggung jawab penegak hukum dalam menyelidiki
aktifitas kejahatan yang terjadi? Bagaimana barang bukti akan diamankan,
pihak manakah yang dianggap bertanggung jawab oleh penegak hukum? Dll.
