CONCEPT AND POLICY

The National Population and Family Development


Board, the NPFDB, was established in 1966 under the
Population and Family Development Act 1966 (Act 352)
under the Prime Ministers Department

Many amendments taken place from 1966 till 2007

It was then gazetted on February 8 2007 which includes


a broader scope not only limiting themselves to planning
services but also family development and socio-economics
perspectives

Currently it is under the purview of the Ministry of


Women, Family and Community Development.

What is Family Planning ?

KEY FACTS ( WORLD HEALTH ORGNISATION )

An estimated 225 million women in developing


countries would like to delay or stop childbearing
but are not using any method of contraception.
Some family planning methods, such as condoms,
help prevent the transmission of HIV and other
sexually transmitted infections.
Family planning / contraception reduces the need
for abortion, especially unsafe abortion.
Family planning reinforces peoples rights to
determine the number and spacing of their
children.
By preventing unintended pregnancy, family
planning /contraception prevents deaths of
mothers and children.

AIM OF FAMILY PLANNING


To advocate, promote and provide information,
education and contraceptive services so that
eligible couples may plan the timing of births and
size of their families.
To advocate and disseminate relevant
information and education relating to family life
education, family development, population and
family planning.
To promote and provide education, information
and services related to men and women
reproductive health.
