What is
DIGSI?

DIGSI 5 is an engineering tool (software) for parameterization,

commissioning and operating all SIPROTEC 5 devices. It
provides a rich set of test tools that speeds up your
commissioning phase and supports you during operations.

What is SIGRA?
SIGRA is a Siemens application that displays the signals
contained in a fault record on time charts. These time
charts are useful to analyze the protective relay response to
the fault.

What is SIPROTEC device?

It is numerical protective relay that uses at least one digital signal
processor instead of a single microprocessor to implement the
protective relay function.

Advantages:
Very short operating time.
several protection functions can be
implemented on it.

2: Setting and testing test:

2.1:Setting the protection function :

Open project file Overcurrent Relay Settings and Operation that
contains the complete configuration of the protective relay.
display the single-line diagram showing the connection of the protective
relay to the electric power circuit.
Set the frequency of the protective relay to the frequency of your local
ac power network.
Access the settings of the overcurrent protection function of the
protective relay, this function which is called 50/51 OC- or 50/51 .

2.1: Settings

We activate the overcurrent protection function which is suitable for our network
(power system ),We choose one of the following time-current characteristics:

Definite-T1(instantaneous relay).

Definite-T2(definite time relay).

Inverse -T1 (inverse-time overcurrent).

We define the-current characteristic Definite-T1 as the overcurrent protection function

of the protective relay.
We set the relay to operate as an instantaneous overcurrent relay by making the time
setting equal to 0 .
We set the threshold current equal to 8000 A .
We set the frequency of the protective relay equal to the frequency of your local ac
power network.
We set current transformers ratio to 1000 A/1 A .

2.2:Testing(Symmetrical fault).
Step01: (duration is set to 10 s).

During the first step, the internal relay test system emulates
balanced currents of 1.00 A at the current inputs of the relay. This is
equivalent to balanced currents of 1000 A in the electric power
circuit because 1000 A/1 A current transformers are used in this
project.
Step02: (duration is set to 2s).
During the second step, the internal relay test system emulates
balanced currents of 10.00 A at the current inputs of the relay. This
is equivalent to balanced currents of 10 000 A in the electric power
circuit because 1000 :1 current transformers are used.

After running our test we get the following result:

The protective relay displays the value (1000 A) of the balanced
line currents during 10s which means that the system is
operating under normal conditions.
LED 4 and LED 16 light up meaning:
LED 4: to indicate that the relay picked up on phases A, B, and C
meaning that the current setting (8000 A) of the protective relay
has been exceeded on phases A, B, and C.

LED 16: to indicate that the relay has tripped.

3.Fault analysis using SIGRA:

EE 537:Industrial power network

Conclusion:
The fault record confirms that the protective relay
operated as expected because the protective relay is set
to operate as an instantaneous over current relay with a
current setting of 8000 A .
