NOISE

POLLUTION

WHAT IS NOISE
POLLUTION?

Sound that is unwanted or disrupts ones quality of life

is called as noise. When there is lot of noise in the
environment, it is termed as noise pollution.

Sound becomes undesirable when it disturbs the normal

activities such as working, sleeping, and during
conversations.

It is an underrated environmental problem because of

the fact that we cant see, smell, or taste it.

World Health Organization stated that Noise must be

recognized as a major threat to human well-being

SOURCES OF NOISE
POLLUTION

Transportation systems are the main source of noise

pollution in urban areas.

Construction of buildings, highways, and streets cause a lot

of noise, due to the usage of air compressors, bulldozers,
loaders, dump trucks, and pavement breakers.

Industrial noise also adds to the already unfavorable state

of noise pollution.

Loud speakers, plumbing, boilers, generators, air

conditioners, fans, and vacuum cleaners add to the existing
noise pollution.

HEALTH EFFECTS

Hearing impairment
Hypertension/High blood pressure
Ischemic heart disease
Noise pollution can damage physiological and psychological
health.
Annoyance
Sleep disturbance
Stress related illness
Productivity loss
It can also cause memory loss
Severe depression
panic attacks.

SOLUTIONS FOR NOISE

POLLUTION
Planting bushes and trees

Regular servicing and tuning of automobiles

Buildings

Equipments

Lubrication of the machinery and servicing should be done

to minimize noise generation

Soundproof doors and windows

Regulations should be imposed to restrict the usage of

play loudspeakers in crowded areas and public places.

Factories and industries should be located far from the

residential area

Social awareness programs should be taken up to educate

the public about the causes and effects of noise pollution

PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NO.

1152

SECTION 5. Community Noise Standards. Appropriate

standards for community noise levels shall be established
considering, among others, location, zoning and land use
classification.
SECTION 6. Standards for Noise-Producing Equipment. There
shall be established a standard for noise producing equipment
such as construction equipment, transportation equipment,
stationary engines, and electrical or electronic equipment and
such similar equipment or contrivances. The standards shall set a
limit on the acceptable level of noise emitted from a given
equipment for the protection of public health and welfare,
considering among others, the magnitude and condition of use,
the degree of noise reduction achievable through the application
of best available technology and the cost of compliance.

SECTION 7. Aircraft Emission and Sonic Booms. Appropriate

government agencies shall encourage research studies on the
harmful effects of aircraft emissions in the environment in order
to establish permissible emission standards.
Research and studies shall also be undertaken to mitigate and/or
minimize the effects of sonic booms in the environment.

THERMAL
POLLUTION

WHAT IS THERMAL
POLLUTION?

It is the degradation of water quality by any process that

changes ambient water temperature.

MAJOR CAUSES
Nuclear Power Plants
Hydro-Electric Power
Coal Fired Power Plants
Industrial Waste
Deforestation
Soil Erosion
Burning of Fossil Fuels

Oxygen dissolved in water decreases

Increases the rate of photosynthesis, which increases

the amount of plant growth

Increases the metabolic rate of fish, which increases

their need for oxygen
