Art
Do Now: For the next 90 seconds on
the space provided in your guided
notes please answer the following
question:
What makes something a work of
art? What makes something a craft?
Be prepared to share and discuss

2 minutes

I have wrestled with this

question a lot
I am an art student at CSU but I didnt start
that way.
I couldnt justify studying art.
What do yall think? (Cards)

Objective
Today you will be able to confidently articulate why you
think miniatures fall into the categories of art or craft
given a brief look at historical and contemporary examples
and the opportunity to plan a miniature piece for a client.
When talking about art today we are going to avoid the
words like, dont like, good, bad, cool unless we can
include a reason why we believe these things

Photo task
1.As we look at this piece work in your group to take one
picture (using your phones) that either emphasizes or hides
the idea of scale. Consider how context changes the way an
object is seen.

Craft?

What do you see that makes you think this is a craft? What
vocabulary can you use to express this?

Unfortunately we dont have the faculties or time to create
one of these pieces
We do have the opportunity to create plans for a client to
experience a bit of what its like to be a commercial artist
and to ask if commercial art counts as art at all?

Your Task
In your groups imagine the following situation
You are at the Chicago Toy Soldier show and are approached by a potential

client
They want you to create a drawing of a diorama that will go with their
particular collection
Each of your groups will get an envelope with a specific collectors interest to
research, plan, and create a drawing to capture the potential clients business
Consider how to keep true to your interest as an artist as you create this plan
Consider the given constraints of collector area of interest, size, special items,
and TIME

15 minutes

Exit Ticket
On the space provided in your guided notes OR in a
conversation with me answer the following question:
In your opinion do miniatures fall into the realm of fine arts or
crafts? Why? How does the planning activity influence your
answer?
If a miniature is put in a museum does it make it any more or less
a work of art? What if that same miniature is in someone's
basement?
