Political

compass
All 5 members of the group have
been situated on the third quadrant
of the compass. The group was
therefore classified under left
libertarians. Other figures who fall
under this category are Mahatma
Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
According to Lawrence Crocker,
left libertarians want to maximize
the range of concrete alternatives
for choice. In other words, no one is
expected to have the same opinions. In

SOCIETY
the same manner, the people are not
expected to make the same choices
regarding social concerns. This tells
us that we view freedom and variety
of choice as an integral part of
dealing with societal issues.
Crocker mentioned that left
libertarians do not tolerate

POLITI CS/ECONOMY
large inequalities in concrete
alternatives and opportunities.
The large difference in concrete
opportunities speak of the
opportunities that wealthy people
have versus what the poor have.
This tells us that we are

POLITI CS/ECONOMY

against a great concentration of

power on a very small sphere. This
also tells us that we do not
tolerate the disparity between
the rich and the poor for we
greatly value equality.
According to Peter Vallentyne,
Left Liberalists uphold the
concept of self-ownership. They

ECONOMY
also believe that everyone should
have an equal share in the
natural resources.
QUESTIONS TO ASK:
1.) Do I value the power of the government

to rule over the people more than the

freedom of the people?
2.) What are my sentiments towards
capitalism and communism?
3.) Can I relate more with private ownership
or public ownership?
4.) Would I want changes and reforms to
benefit only myself or the common good?
5.) How do I view the capability of the
people to make sound judgment on their
own?
These questions would help us
determine what our position in the
political compass tells us. The
questions touch on beliefs and ideals
in viewing politics, the society and
the economy. They also touch on
certain issues here in the
Philippines which we can base our
answers on.

All five members of the group
have been classified under
left-libertarianism. Thus, we
all have similar ideological
positions.
There are other means in
determining ones ideological
position. By asking ourselves
questions regarding political
issues, we can determine where
we stand in terms of ideas and
beliefs regarding the political
system through our answers. The
method of asking questions can
be guided by books that could
help us analyze our answers.
There are also many other
quizzes and tests found in the
internet which could help
determine ones ideological
positions.
