What is hydraulic pump ?

Hydraulic pump is a mechanical source of
power that converts mechanical power into
hydraulic energy (flow and pressure).
It generates flow with enough power to
overcome pressure induced by the load at
the pump outlet

Function of Hydraulic Pumps

When a hydraulic pump operates, it
performs two functions.
1. its mechanical action creates a vacum at
the pump inlet which allows atmospheric
pressure to force liquid from the reservoir
into the inlet line to the pump.
2. its mechanical action delivers this liquid to
the pump outlet and forces it into the
hydraulic system.

EXTERNAL GEAR PUMP

HOW IT
WORKS ??
1. Gears unmesh at suction side (inlet). Liquid
flows into the cavity and is trapped by the
gear teeth as they rotate.
2. Liquid travels around the interior of the
casing in pockets between the teeth and the
casing it doesnt pass between the gears.
3. The gears come back to mesh and forces the
liquid out to hydraulic system

HIGH VISCOSITY

High resistance to flow.

Increased power consumption due to
frictional loss.
High temperature caused by friction.
Increased pressure drop because of the
resistance.
Possibility of sluggish or slow operation.
Difficulty in separating air from oil in a
reservoir.
Greater vacuum at the pump inlet, causing
cavitation.
Higher system noise level.

LOW VISCOSITY

Increased internal leakage.

Excessive water.
Possibility of decreased pump
efficiency, causing slower operation
of the actuator.
Increased temperature resulting from
leakage losses.

CONCLUSION
Hydraulic pumps are sources of power for many
dynamic machines ,and operate according to the
displacement principle
The pump converts the mechanical energy of the
drive (i.e. torque, speed) into hydrostatic energy
(i.e. flow, pressure).
So,these pumps are very suitable to operate at
high
system pressures and are ideal for hydraulics.
While gear pumps operate with fixed displacement
volume, vane and piston pumps may operate with
fixed or variable displacement volumes.
Hydraulic pumps are manufactured depending on
different functional and hydraulic system
requirements, such as operating medium, required
range of pressure, type of drive, etc
