Raster Graphics
Raster graphics are graphics that are
made up of Bitmaps (pixels) the
bitmaps records the colour
information for every square inch of
the graphic. The graphics have a set
resolution meaning that they can not
be stretched too much as they loose
all of their quality and the graphic
becomes to look overly stretched and
worn out.

Vector Graphics
A vector graphic is a graphic that is
made up of vector paths. The vector
path is made up of curves, points
and angles that are all defined by a
start and end point. The vector
graphic doesnt have a fixed
resolution meaning that it can be on
a large or small scale.

Raster Graphics

JPEG
Stands For

Joint Photographic Experts

Group

Used For/Example

JPEG can be used for photographs

and web formats. A lot of
photographers use JPEG as it is a
way to save space whilst still
being able to edit the
photographs.

Advantage

The advantage of using JPEG is

that it a small file, this means that
it saves a lot of storage space as
the file gets compressed and
becomes so small.

Disadvantage

The disadvantage of using JPEG is

because the file size gets
compressed so much over time
the file can loose quality. This is
because every time it is saved
then re-opened it is compressing

GIF
Stands For

Graphics Interchange Format

Used For/Example

A GIF is used for short digital

animations that are found on the
internet

Advantage

An advantage of a GIF is that they

allow a middle tie of both
photograph and film, this middle
tie allows there to be a more
physical appearance of image
which can show more emotion
and movement.

Disadvantage

A disadvantage of a GIF is that

they can often be a very poor
quality due to the way that they
are created, meaning that they
are not always the most pleasant
thing to look at.

TIFF
Stands For

Tag Image File format

Used For/Example

TFF is a desktop publisher that is

often used when saving Adobe
documents

Advantage

The advantage of TIFF is that you

can save a document that has
multiple pages to a single file
meaning that you dont have to
open so many different
documents and save them
individually.
TIFF also has a lossless
compression option which allows
you to save your work without
having to compress it so that it
doesnt loose the quality.

Disadvantage

The disadvantage of TIFF is that

because the files dont have to
compress and because there is so
many different documents saved
to one file, the files become really

BMP
Stands For
Used For/Example

Bitmap Image File

Is a file that is used for saving
images

Advantage

The advantage of using BMP is

that there is no loss in
compression meaning that the
quality will not change when the
image is saved.
This file is similar to TIFF and JPEG
as it is a file storage,

Disadvantage

The disadvantage of BMP is due to

its lack of compression and the
ability to keep the quality of the
images so sharp the file sizes are
a lot larger and they take up a lot
more storage space.

Vector Graphics

PSD
Stands For

Photoshop document

Used For/Example

Image manipulation files

(front cover of magazines/ image
manipulation)

Advantage

An advantage of PSD is that it

saves layers, page formatting and
swatches. This means that the file
can hold a lot of editing and a lot
of different edits.

Disadvantage

A disadvantage of PSD is that it is

hard to share files in this format,
the person who is receiving the
document will also have to have
the photo application. Meaning
that it makes it harder to share
the file.
The files are also really big
meaning they take up a lot of

AI
Stands For
Used For/Example

Adobe illustrator art

Creating logos.

Advantage

The advantage of this is that it

can be scaled to big and small
sizes as it made of vectors so has
no real definitions.

Disadvantage

The software can be really hard to

use due to the fact that it is really
hard to use, it also is another
software that can only be viewed
on the software it is made on.

FLA
Stands For
Used For/Example

Flash File
Creating animations and games

Advantage

The files can be high quality both

sound and video but can also
maintain a reasonably small file
size for the quality of the content.

Disadvantage

FLA often needs to be updated so

it sometimes doesnt allow things
to work unless it has been
updated which can become a
hassle

WMF
Stands For
Used For/Example

Windows MetaFile
Logo creation

Advantage

Can be scaled on a large scale

and a smaller scale and still keep
the quality due to being made of
vectors.

Disadvantage

As WMF contains both Vector and

bitmap features sometimes the
graphics can be shown on a large
scales and other times it can not
stretch to this without loosing the
quality and focus.

File Format
Capture and
Optimising

Compression
Definition

Advantage

Disadvantage

Compression is when the sizes

of files are reduced by the
amount of information that is
saved

An advantage of compression is
that the file sizes are much
smaller to save meaning that
storage is less of a demand and
more can be saved
A disadvantage of compression is
that images can become more
pixelated as they are compressed
as they save smaller amounts of
colours per each square inch
every time meaning that they
loose the original pure quality

Image Capture
Method
How is it used for image
capture of graphics

Scanner
A scanner is a device that allows
you to be able to make digital
copies of physical work like
sketches, drawings and other
mixed media products.

Method

Camera

How is it used for image

capture of graphics

A camera can take photographs of

physical work which you can then
upload to a computer.

Method

Graphics Tablet

How is it used for image

capture of graphics

A graphics tablet has a pen that

works as a mouse which allows
your physical actions of a pen to
draw digitally which can then be
projected onto a computer button.

Optimising
Why would you optimise?

How can you optimise?

you would want to optimise

photographs and images that
are going to be published on
the internet. This is because
they need to be an easy view
when on the web.
You can optimise files by turning
them into PDF files and you can
optimise photographs by changing
them into JPEG each way basically
means you are reducing the size
of the files.

Advantage to optimising

Images that are not optimised

tend to have a larger file size. So
when you optimised you are decreasing the file size.

Disadvantage to optimising

The disadvantage to optimising is

that you can often loose the
content of the file as the

Storage

File Size
What could affect a Working
Scale (Photoshop) document
file size?

the amount of editing that you

do on the image will effect the
document size, the more
editing and layers the larger
the file.

How could you reduce the file

size of a Working Scale
document without affecting
quality?

You can reduce the files by

minimally editing so that there
isnt as many layers to the piece.
You can also merge the layers so
that they compress more.

What is an advantage of
scaling up images before
exporting?

The photo quality will be a lot

sharper and clearer meaning the
photo will look a better quality

What is a disadvantage of
scaling up images before
exporting?

The main disadvantage of scaling

images is the file becoming much
larger and increasing in size.

File Naming Conventions

What naming conventions
could you use when creating
your video game assets?

Why is it a good idea to

accurately name your assets?

It is a good idea to name assests

accurately because if not they all
become jumbled together and it is
really hard to be able to find what
you are looking for and also when
assests are not named correctly
they tend to get left more as
people dont want to be searching
through them all.

Asset Management
Why would you use folders
when storing your assets?

You would use folders when

storing asserts because it will
allow you to be able to store
them and arrange them into
files, and sub files.
this means that the file will
be easy to find and will also
mean other people would be
able to allocate the file they
need much easier

What folders would you create Firstly I would create a main

and what would you save
folder which has the subject
within them
name, then inside that folder
there would be all of the
components of the subject each
folderd individually. Then inside
them folders I would have all of
the sub catogary files for each
of the subjects. E.g research
