SCIENTIFIC LITERACY
Scientific literacy is knowledge and
understanding of scientific concepts and
processes required for personal decision making,
participation in civic and cultural affairs and
economic productivity.
It is not only the ability to read, write and
communicate own thinking , but ability to
formulate question, describe and explain natural
phenomena.

Tenets of Scientific Literacy include ability to;

Find or determine answer to questions


derived from everyday experiences
Describe ,explain and predict natural
phenomena
Understand articles about Science
Identify scientific issues underlying natural
and local decision.
Pose explanations based on evidence

Explain phenomena scientifically
Evaluate and design scientific enquiring
Interpret data and evidence scientifically

How do we measure Literacy


Literacy can be measured in terms of
Absolute terms -- distinguish
between those who can read and write basic
test and those who cant

Relative terms -- challenging

Importance of Science
It help our economic well being and quality
of life.
Understand and shape our daily lives
It helps interact with our environment,
asking questions and seeking answers
For managing our health and well being
