POLLUTION

Evocation

Pre-requisite Knowledge

Noise mitigation from roadway, aircraft and industrial

Effect of sonar wave on aquatic life

What are Ear muffs?

General Objective:
Students will be able to gain knowledge about the source of noise
pollution causes and effects of noise pollution

Specific Objectives:
Students will be able to
1. List any five causes / sources of noise pollution (S)
2. Assess the any five effects of noise pollution (S, & T)
3. Implement any five control measures of noise pollution (S, E & T)
4. Construct a mind map related to noise pollution

DEFINITION
Any Unwanted, Unpleasant Sound that causes discomfort
Unit of Noise - Decibel (Db)
- It is actually a number representing the relative loudness of two
different sounds.
Decibel is a ratio expressed as the logarithmic scale relative to
a reference sound pressure level.

Measured Intensity (I)

Sound Intensity Level (DB)= log 10 -----------------------------Reference Intensity (I0)

20 Hz - 20 kHz (2 x 10-5 Pa) Human hearing range

120 dB is painfully loud to most individuals

For adults, normal hearing and degree of hearing loss fall into the
following categories
0 dB - 20 dB .......normal hearing
20 dB - 40 dB .....mild hearing loss
40 dB - 55 dB .....moderate hearing loss (living room)
55 dB - 70 dB .....moderately severe hearing loss
70 dB - 90 dB ..... severe hearing loss
>90 dB.................profound hearing loss

STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR NOISE

POLLUTION

The Central Pollution Control Board (PCB) recommended noise

standards for ambient air and for automobiles, domestic
appliances and construction equipments, which were later
notified in Environment (Protection)

Stimulating questions/Analogy/New ideas and Concepts:

1. How the noise or echo sound are controlled in cinema theater?

Using sound proofing material such as Porous absorbers, typically open
cell rubber foams or melamine sponges, absorb noise by friction within
the cell structure
2. How the noise from machines were reduced?
Acoustic quieting is the process of making machinery quieter by
damping vibrations to prevent them from reaching the observer.
3. What is the effect of misophonia?
Misophonia, is a sound disorder, It induce negative emotions (anger,
flight, hatred, disgust).
