Introduction
What is Super alloy?
A Super alloy is a metallic alloy which can be
used at high temperatures, often in excess of 0.7
Tm
Super alloys were first introduced during WWII
to describe a group of alloys developed for
aircraft turbine engines.
They are usually composites of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr
in addition to W, Mo,Ta, Nb, Ti, & Al

Ni-Based Super Alloys

Types :
1.Hastelloy
2.Inconel
3.Waspaloy
4.Rene alloys
5.Haynes alloys
6.MP98T
7.TMS alloys
8.CMSX single crystal alloys

Waspaloy
Waspaloy is an age hardened
austenitic, face-centered cubic nickelbased super alloy.
Waspaloy alloy is typically used in
high temperature applications,
particularly in gas turbines.
It demonstrates superior strength
properties through temperatures of
roughly 980C (1800F).
Good corrosion resistance
Limited Weldability.

Heat Treatment
Annealing
1.Hardening and strength properties are developed by
precipitation of gamma prime(Ni3TiAl). Its solution temp in
Waspaloy is normally1860/1880F
2.Annealed or low temp can be obtained by cooling very
rapidly above the gamma prime solvus.
3.Air cooling is desirable for large sections.
Hardening
1.Best stress rupture and creep properties are obtained at
high temp of 1975deg F.
Aging Treatment
1.Stabilize 1550deg F 4hrs, air cool, followed by
precipitation aging 1400 deg F 16 hrs, air cool.
2.However, if solution treating is 1975 deg F, then 1550deg
F stabilization aging time is increased to 24 hrs, instead of
4 hours.

Workability
Hot Working:
a. Conducted in the temp. range 1850-2150deg F.
b. If deformation is too rapid, the temp. of the workpiece can build up
which exceed the 2150 deg F and hot short tears will result.
c. Alloy is normally aircooled from the hot work operation.
. Cold Working:
a. Waspaloy has good cold ductility when annealed above or below
gamma prime solvus temperature.
b. Cold worked areas will age more than unworked sections.

Workability
Machinability:
a. Difficult to machine
b. The following tool geometry, feeds, and speeds have been found
satisfactory for lathe turning:
0 back rake
6-8 side rake
5-8 clearance (end and side)
15-20 lead angles may be used to reduce feed pressure on
roughing cuts.
c. A smoother finish can be obtained by machining in the fully aged
condition.
. Welding:
a. Waspaloy should always be in the annealed or solution treated
condition before attempting welding.
b. Any molten weld metal should be protected from atmospheric
contamination. Argon is recommended for both sides of butt
joints. Rapid cooling of the weld area is best practice. Copper
back-up bars and /or water-cooled fixtures or sprays are

Conclusion
Due to high strength at high temperature, good surface stability
and low thermal diffusivity Waspaloy is a good super alloy to
use in high temperature regions.
