Analysis of my own

magazine
By: Leeroy Magaramiri

Denotation:
Denotation is everything we see. We can see
the masthead in black bold letters with a
white background and the issue number is
above it. There are puffs included on both
sides of the magazine. There is a tagline at
the top of the magazine. Most of the cover
lines are mainly on the left side of the
magazine. We can see the main cover line
that says Jimi Hendrix in the middle of the
page. There is a barcode on the bottom right
of the page. The model is making eye
contact and he looks like he is fixing his
cufflinks for his suit. There is a dark blue
background colour. We can see a stylish
design/pattern on the models coat. There

that we see. The model is wearing a coat
with stylish patterns on the sleeve. This is a
symbol of wealth as it shows that the coat
must have been very expensive which
makes his audience envy him. He also looks
like he is fixing his cufflinks. This is can be a
stereotype because it is a typical thing for
men to do because it is a symbol of
masculinity, wealth and power which will
make the audience idolise him. The model is
also making eye contact with the audience
which shows that he wants to communicate
with his audience which then builds a sense
of intimacy towards the audience. Moreover,
the main coverline Jimi Hendrix is in bold
capital letters to show that this is a formal
topic as it is his 50th anniversary issue. This
also tells us that he was a famous guitarist
that must have done something that made
people remember him for the past 50 years
and so this will make he audience mentally
show respect towards him.

Model:
The model is a famous guitarist named
Jimi Hendrix. His standing posture and
his fancy jacket excludes power and his
wealth which makes his audience give
respect to him back.
Direct Address:
The model is looking straight into the
camera to show acknowledgement of
his audience and in return, the audience
will feel a sense of appreciation and so
they will adore him.
Mise-en-scene:
Mise-en-scene is everything we see in
the frame. There is not much of a
setting in the main image and its all just
a dark blue colour. The front cover is
about the memorial of Jimi Hendrix
and so you could argue that the colour
blue represents peace to show that the
artist rested in peace after what he did.
In addition, the low key lighting also
adds to this mood of death but also

the audience:
model.
I think this might be aimed at a mass
audience because this is a memorial of
a famous artist and so a lot of people
will want to read more about it.
Genre:
A genre is a set of characteristics. The
genre of this is rock and blues music.
This is shown through the low key
lighting on the main image and . We
can also see secondary images of
electric guitars which were to let
audience know that this magazine has
something to do with rock music.

Front Cover

Colour:
The colour blue represents
calmness, cleanliness and in this
case it would represent a sense of
trust towards the artist/model.
Icon:
An icon is a picture or a person that
is representative of something. The
model acts as an icon of the
magazine because he is
representing the history of rock
music in which the audience will find
fascinating if they are fans of his
Masthead:
work or rock music.
A masthead is the name of the
magazine which is usually found at
the top of the front cover. The
masthead of the magazine is
Guitarist. It is above the model
and it is large black bold letters with
a large white strip in the
background. You could argue that
the font of it is formal to show that
is has respectful approach to music
Coverlines:
or musicians in this case.
Cover lines are found on the sides of
the front cover and they usually tell
you who the target audience is.
From the coverlines we can see
things such as guitars on sale being
advertised and a new discovered
artist who the audience might be
interested. We can also see that
they are doing a give away of Jimi
Hendrixs guitar which excite the
audience because they will want to
have something that their idol
owned.

Main coverline:
The main cover line states the main story
that will be in the magazine and it will be
in a bigger font size different than the
rest of the cover lines. The main
coverline Jimi Hendrix is in a large
white bold font written across the page
and on top of it is a text that says 50 th
Anniversary issue that is in a smaller
font and in a light blue colour. The fact
that the main coverline is the name of
the model and not anything else like
some of his quotes or catchphrases
Barcode:
suggests that as it is his memorial, his

that allows the magazine to be scanned
when buying and it is usually found at the
bottom of the magazine. The barcode can
be found on the bottom right of the front
cover and that way, it can be the last
thing that the audience will look at when
purchasing the magazine.
Target Audience:
The audience for this might be guitar
lovers because of the secondary images
of guitars that are found on the
coverlines or just fans of rock and blues
music in general because those were the
artists genre of music that he was known
for. This is aimed at a niche audience
because not everyone is into rock music
or guitars. However you might argue that
this is aimed at a mass audience because
most people will recognize the famous
Jimi Hendrix.

Representation:
Representation is the way in which the
media constructs aspects of real life
such as people, culture, ethnicity,
gender etc. The model is representing
himself as wealthy, masculine and in
power through the way he looks as if he
is doing his cufflinks or fixing his sleeves
which compliments his appearance. The
purpose of all of this was to make the
audience see him as a person that was

stunning in his looks.
The majority of the coverlines are on the
left side of the magazine and there is a
puff on the hotspot on the right side.
This was to tell the audience what is new
with some of the things they love.

Icon:
An icon is a picture or a person that is
representative of something. You
could say that the model is an icon of
rock and blues music in general
through the way his work has left a lot
of memories behind and possibly
inspired others.
Type of shot:
The type of shot was medium shot and
the purpose of this was to show his
upper body actions and hand gestors.
This way, the audience will feel as if
they are being invited in.
Anchorage:
An Anchorage is how images are
referred to. The main coverline acts as
an anchorage of the model because it
mentions his name to emphasise that
this is a time for his remembrance.
Strapline:
The strapline can be see at the top of
the page on a red strip and it
advertises free Fender custom shop
pages in which the target audience
might find intriguing because it might
be something they might like.

ontents Page

Layout:
There is the Contents title at the top
left side of the double page spread. This
follows the Codes and Conventions of a
contents page because like all magazine,
it is at the top of the page. We can see a
thick line going across the top of the
page and a smaller Contents title
sitting on the line on the top right of the
second page. The issue number and the
date were below it and they were sitting
on a line that was going across the page
as well. This was all part of the page
design. We can see the subheadings and
page titles with the page numbers listed
down on the right hand of the second
page. The reason for this was to tell the
audience that they should look at the
double spread image of the guitar first
then move on to the text. The will direct

the audience
follow/read.
We can also see maroon colour coat with
extra guitar strings on top of it. This
might have been done to show the
important things that Jimi Hendrix left
behind because the guitar represents his
music career and the coat represent his
money and fame. The setting also tells
about the genre and how the model Jimi
Hendrix is being represented. The fact
that its in a bedroom tells us that his
genre of blues music was quite chilled
and it also tells us that the artist did not
show off too much of his wealth. There is
low key lighting on the image and the
edges are faded out to highlight to the
audience what they should be looking at.

Fonts:
The fonts are used to tell the audience
what is more important or what they
should read first in order of the size. We
can see the Contents title at the top of
the page in a large text size which tell the
audience that this is the most important.
The subheadings then follow along with
the page numbers and titles which are in
a smaller font size. Not only was this to
tell the audience whats more important
but it was also to make all of the text fit in
especially the page numbers and titles.
We can also see the month that the
magazine was published next to the page
number at the bottom of the page. This
was to give the audience further
information about the magazine. We can
also see a caption on the bottom left that

which the main image was linked to.

Page numbers:
We can see the page numbers on the
column listed down on the right and this
will come in useful to the audience
because it will be easy to find the pages
for the topics they want.
Subheadings:
We can see subheadings on the right
hand side of the two pages and they are
in a larger font so that the audience can
easily identify that this is a subheading.
Secondary image:
We can see a secondary image of the
front cover. This is at the bottom right
on the main image and it is in a small
icon with captions. The purpose of it
was to let the audience know who

Mode of address:
The way the magazine communicates
with the audience. The magazine has a
formal approach to its target audience.
This is through the tone of the text the
main image. We see a guitar lying on a
bed connoting that music can be a form
of relaxation. This acts as an anchorage
of the genre because blues music is
also known as relaxation music. This
will establish the mood of the magazine
to the target audience of what the
magazine is going to be like and what
Columns:
sort of things it might feature.
There is only one column on the far
right and it includes the subheadings
for the pages and the page numbers
with a brief description.
Pictures linked to articles in the
magazine:
The main image is linked to an article
in the magazine and this is about the
model in which the audience will be

We cans see hotspots. One of the
hotspots is the guitar and where it is
placed which makes it significant. We
can also see the caption of the main
image on the top right and it is in a
large white font which makes it stand
out to the audience because of the
Date/
issue number:
dark background.
The issue number refers to the number
of individual publications during the
year. We can see the issue number
411 at the top right of the second
page along side with the date that the
magazine was published. This will
come in useful for keeping the record of
the magazine for future reasons.

Shot type:
The shot type for the main image is a long
shot because we can se the whole of the
guitar as well as the coat but not the whole
of the guitar case. However, you could say
that it can be a high angle shot because it
looks as if we are looking down at the props
on the bed. This creates a representation to
the audience of looking down to what the
artist Jimi Hendrix left such as his music
career.

Target audience:
The target audience are the people that
the magazine is aimed towards. As the
magazine is aimed mainly at guitar
lovers, the target audience for the
contents page varies. It can be people
who are into Jimi Hendrixs work and
want to know more about him. On the
other and, they might also be just
people who love guitars and want to
find out more about them. The
magazine makes the contents
appealing to both audiences because
they might be into the same genre of
music or have an interest in similar
things.

Double Page Spread

Layout:
As this is a double page spread, we can see
the large image on the right while the article
is on the left. There is a quote and the text is
going round it. There are two columns and
there is an image on the top of the second
column. Overall, the layout of it is quite
formal which might tell us what sort of target
audience that it is aimed at.
Columns:
There are two columns of text. The purpose
of this might have been to make sure that
everything is spaced out because if there
were more columns, the page would not be
as appealing and inviting because the
audience will want to look at the images and
get back to text quickly.
Representation:
The model in the secondary image is making
no eye contact with the audience and he
looking at his guitar. This might show that he
wants to do his music and he does not care
much about his audience. Either that or
maybe he was performing and could not look
at his guitar while playing.
Overall impression:
To sum up, I think that this double page
spread does show who the target audience is
because it gives us an assumption of the age
range through the tone of the text and it also
keeps the audience entertained or satisfied in
a way through the guitars that are being
shown. It also refers to the music genre that
the model Jimi Hendrix was into.

Fonts:
The Blues66 masthead is at the top
left of the page and it is in a thick font
but really small so that it doesn't take
too much space. The first letter of the
article is quite large and this part of
the codes and conventions of a
magazine article; the dropped cap,
can be used to begin a document or a
chapter, or to add interest to a
newsletter or invitation. Moreover, the
quote is is in a different font size than
the text and it also looks like it is in a
different font than the text. This was

for this page might be people who are
interested in reading about the
history of blues music. We can also
make assumptions of the age range
through the tone of the quote The
vocalisation, the musicality of Claptons
playing was in another league, really.
The way it says really at the end of
the quote is quite informal and this
might have been for entertainment
for the audience.

Masthead/headline:
The masthead is not easily noticed
but it is located on the bottom left
next to the page number and the
date that the magazine was
published. We can also the main
headline which is on the top left of
the page and it says Blues66. It
was placed here so that it doesnt
take too much space and it is also in
the same location in the following
pages. The purpose of this was to

in the article of another blues music
artist and there is a caption in the
image with his name on. This was to
tell the target audience a similar
artist they might have an interest in.
Use of colours:
There is not much use of colour
because the article page and the
secondary image are in black and
white. However there is colour on the
image to the right. The theme
colours used seem to be black, white
and blue and these are the colours
from the main headline on the top
left.
