HUMAN SETTLEMENTS AND

TOWN PLANNING

O-D SURVEY
ORIGIN-DESTINATION SURVEY:
Transportation planning is crucial
to providing routes and services
people really need. Reliable data is
essential to good planning. A
Origin-Destination survey will help
gather: extensive, up-to-date
information on current daily trip
patterns of area residents.
This survey informs the planners of
our towns about the communities
transportation needs.

What is the Origi

n-Destination Sur
vey?
The survey is an
initiative to
collect current
and reliable
information about
trip patterns and
daily travel
choices of
residents of a
certain area.

OD U.S.A. logo

What kind of information is being collected, and

how?
It randomly selects 5% of the population.
Participants will be asked questions about all
trips made on the previous day by each person in
the household. That means walking, cycling,
driving as long as the trip has an origin, a
destination, and a purpose.
What is the purpose of this survey?
To understand the ever-changing transportation
needs of large communities.

OD survey form

Who is conducts this survey?

In India, BPC (Baroda Productivity Council) undertakes
this survey. It was established in 1959 and is affiliated to
NPC, New Delhi.

How large an area within the National Capital Region

is being surveyed?
Generally 25,000 households are selected. It is done by
home interview survey, roadside interview survey, work
place interview, etc.

DESIRE LINE DIAGRAM

In desire line diagram the travel between various
pairs of zones is represented by bands, whose
width is proportional to the travel, drawn between
the centroids of the zones.
The desire line diagram is very useful in
understanding the travel pattern in a study area
and carrying out the capacity sufficiency or
deficiency studies of the road network.
Desire line diagram has got important application
in the study of transportation planning.

These lines are drawn at 2 levels:

Macro level: The lines that have been eroded on
the earths surface due to the movement of
animals and people.

Micro level: Eg: which customer visits which

store. A line is drawn from each customer point
to the various stores he visits to find out the area
of influence of each store.

Example of desire line diagram

Other examples:
A national home improvement/builder's supply operation
maps weekday and weekend spider diagrams to better
understand variations in these market segments.
A convenience store/gas station chain creates desire lines
based on affinity card data to examine the impact of new
suburban locations on older, highway-oriented stores.
A multi store dry cleaning/laundry operation uses
customer addresses and time of day to visualize customer
travel patterns such as going to work versus going home.
Large supermarket chains use desire lines weighted by
sales to analyze the effect of distance on expenditures per
visit.
A retailer uses spider diagrams to identify weekday versus
weekend shoppers. The resulting analysis can then be used
to identify consumer behaviour and shopping patterns. For
example, weekday shoppers travel shorter distances than

TRIP GENERATION, ATTRACTION,

DISTRIBUTION AND MODAL SPLIT
There are four step in transportation forecasting
process.

TRIP
GENERATION

This analysis generally focuses on residences.

The trip generation aims at predicting the total
number of trips generated and attracted to each
zone of the study area.

Types of trips:
Trips can be classified by trip
purpose, trip time of the day,
and by person type.
Trip generation models are
found to be accurate if separate
models are used based on trip
purpose.
The trips can be classified
based on the purpose of the
journey as trips for work, trips
for education, trips for
shopping, trips for recreation
and other trips.

Factors effecting
trip generation:
Income
vehicle ownership
house hold
structure
family size.
In addition factors
like value of land,
residential density
and accessibility.
