Let us look at the key factors which are

destroying human health
- Pesticides & Herbicides
- Fertilizers
- Genetic Modification
- Additives
- Radiation
- Boosters to animals and other food

Pesticides & Herbicides

Both these synthetic chemicals are used at

different stages of crop to save the crop from
pests and insects/weeds respectively. There
are about 450 types of pesticides and
herbicides are used with different level of
dosages as per the need.

Health Hazards:

Almost all the pesticides contain the most

dangerous chemical called Organophosphates. The
residue of this chemical found in crop is among the
top three environmentalCANCERrisk.
The residue of this chemical is linked with range of
conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
(CFS) in children
Decreased male fertility
Foetal abnormality
Parkinson
Breast cancer in women

Fertilizers
Chemical fertilizers are used to provide nutrients and
boost the growth of crop in quantity and appearance.
Health hazards:

Nitrate is the common ingredient found in most of the

fertilizers. Nitrategets converted into nitrosamines,
which retains in the crop yield and on consumption of
such yield over a period of time causesCANCER.
Almost all the non-organic farming is dependent
on fertilizers for its commercial interest and not
for health prospects.

Children are more vulnerable as they have a higher intake of

food and water per unit of body weight than adults, also their
relatively immature organ system has limited ability to
detoxify these substances.

Genetic Modification
Genetic modification involves insertion or deletion of genes
using genetic engineering. There are various reasons to modify
farming in this way such as; producing genetically engineered
seeds to get high yield, Modification of certain DNA to improve
the power (immunity) to act as self fighting against pests, to
improved the crops capacity to remain fresh even after ripening
etc.
Health hazards:

Autism

Reproductive disorders
Digestive problems

Additives
Food additivesare substances added tofoodto preserve
flavour or enhance its taste and appearance.
Someadditiveshave been used for centuries; for example,
preserving foodby pickling (with vinegar), salting, as with
bacon, preserving sweets ,etc.
Health hazards:
Tetra zine (yellow colour agent) links toallergic
reactions, headache, asthma, growth retardation
and hyperactivity in children.
Monosodium glutamate and aspartame has its dangerous
effects on heart.

Hydrogenated fats or trans fats has been directly linked to

coronary heart disease(CHD).
cancer and skin problems.

Radiation
Radiation therapy is used in GM process and also on the
crop/food at various stages to kill harmful bacteria/micro
organisms.
Health hazards:
Radiation has its cancerous effects on human body parts
such as; eyes, bones, kidney, heart, reproductive organs and
endocrine system.
Radiation effects are slow and life threatening. Many times it
creates disabilities by birth/childhood or in the adult age.

Boosters/preservatives in
foodstuff
Animals are treated with antibiotics, antioxidants,
hormones in varied amount to boost its growth and
appearance.
Health hazards:
On consumption of such produce, human body looses
immunity due to the lack of response to that antibiotic.
Excess amount of salt and sugar (preservatives) used to
enhance the life of product has dangerous side effects
such as; obesity, hypertension, heart diseases,
kidney malfunctioning etc.

CONCLUSION
What needs to
Decrease
Change?
non-organic foods in

stores and increase organic foods

Import and export regulations for
organic food among different
countries
Use of natural pesticides like
Neem and organic fertilizers like
compost or manure.
A guarantee that food is safe and
free from toxic chemicals.
Consumer participation
Encouraging the farmers to grow
organic food stuffs.
