Construction Of OFC
The glass employed in a fiber optic cable is
ultra pure, ultra transparent silicon dioxide.
One reference put this in perspective by
noting that "if seawater were as clear as this
type of fiber optic cable then you would be
able to see to the bottom of the deepest trench
in the Pacific Ocean."
To get some feeling for how small these sizes actually are,
understand that a human hair has a diameter of 100 microns.

Transmitter For OFC

Transmitter component serves two functions:

First, it must be a source of the light coupled into the fiber optic cable.
Secondly, it must modulate this light so as to represent the binary data
that it is receiving from the Source.
Transmitter can then be thought of as an Electro-Optical (EO) transducer.
Prepared By: Tauseef Amjad Latif, tauseef@corvit.com

LEDs & LDs

There are two types of light emitting
junction diodes that can be used as the
optical source of the transmitter.
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
LED's are simpler and generate
incoherent, lower power light.
Laser Diode (LD)
LD's are more complex and generate
coherent, higher power light.

Modulator For OFC

There are several different schemes for carrying out the
modulation function.
Examples:
Intensity Modulation (ASK)
Frequency Shift Keying (FSK)
Phase Shift Keying (PSK)
Intensity Modulation also is referred to as Amplitude Shift
Keying (ASK) and On-Off Keying (OOK) and is mostly used
because of its simplicity.

Receiver For OFC

Receiver component serves two functions:

First, it must sense or detect the light coupled out of the fiber
optic cable then convert the light into an electrical signal.
Secondly, it must demodulate this light to determine the
identity of the binary data that it represents.
Receiver can then be thought of as an Electro-Optical (EO) transducer.

Splice / Splicing
A splice is a device to connect one fiber
optic cable to another permanently.
Splicing is a technique by which we
connect two optical fiber cables.
Some vendors offer splices that can be
disconnected that are not permanent so that
they can be disconnected for repairs or
rearrangements.
Prepared By: Tauseef Amjad Latif, tauseef@corvit.com

Types of Splices
There are two principal types of splices:
Fusion splices - uses an electric arc /
spark to weld two fiber optic cables
together. The splices offer sophisticated,
computer controlled alignment of fiber
optic cables to achieve losses as low as
0.05 dB.
Mechanical splices - all share common
elements. They are easily applied in the
field, require little or no tooling and offer
losses of about 0.2 dB.

Deployment Concerns of OFC

Handling Fiber & Disposing of Waste

* Bending radius is 10 times the diameter of the OFC.
* Fiber pieces are sharp, small and difficult to see. Take
care when stripping, cleaning & cleaving OFC.
* Safely dispose-off all fiber waste in CIN BINS or place
scotch-tape upside down (O Shape).

Deployment Concerns of OFC

Cleaning Fluids
* Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
IPA is highly flammable & conductive
* HFE Volition Cleaning Agent
HFE is non-flammable, non-conductive & non-alcoholic

OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflecto-meter)
Fluke Meter ***
LED / LD Gun

Prepared By: Tauseef Amjad Latif, tauseef@corvit.com

Optical Time Domain

Reflecto- Meter (OTDR)
OTDR uses backscattered light of
the fiber to imply loss. The OTDR
works like RADAR, sending a high
power laser light pulse down the
fiber and looking for return signals
from backscattered light in the fiber
itself or reflected light from
connector or splice interfaces.
Not recommended over shorter
distances
