PAST CONTINUOUS

SPELLING RULES
VERBS WITH ING.

The general rule is just to add -ING


to the end of the verb.
EXAMPLES
Feel . feeling
Go . going
Work ..
Working
Walk
walking
Talk . Talking

If the verb ends in an E we remove


the E and add ING.
EXAMPLES
Have .

Exception:
Be .
Being
See .
Seeing

Having
Make.
Making
Take ..
Taking
He was having breakfast yesterday
morning.

If the verb ends in a consonant + vowel +


consonant, we double the final consonant and
add ING.

EXAMPLES
Stop .
Stopping
Sit
.
Sitting
Get ..
Getting
They were sitting on that chair just
now.

But, we do not double the final


consonant when the verb ends in W, X or
Y.

Enjoy

Snow

It was snowing last winter.

When a verb ends in '-l' the '-l' is


doubled and '-ing' is added (in British
English):

If the verb ends in IE we change it to


YING.

If a verb has more than one syllable and ends


inconsonant+vowel+consonant, we double
the final consonantonly if the final syllable is
stressedand add '-ing'
