11s3 maths: averages and range

L.O.s: TBAT: (write these down)

Perform basic numerical calculations with and without a calculator

Calculate the mean, median, range, and mode, of a dataset
Compare data using the median and range
Calculate the average from a frequency table

Definitions: (write these down)

Mode: the number which comes up the most
Range: the largest number minus the smallest
Median: the middle number of a list of numbers ordered from small to big
Note: take the middle two, add and divide by two if there are an even number of numbers in the list

Modal score: score which comes up the most often (i.e. mode)
Frequency: how often
Mean: add the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are
Quantitative: refers to things which can be measured, eg. Height, mass
Qualitative: refers to things which can be categorised, eg. Gender, eye colour

11s3 maths: averages and range

Pre-starter examples:
1) 15% of 125
=
=
=18.75
2) Given these heights in cm: 175, 139, 190, 178, 180, 155, 160
find the:
a) Mean: sum of numbers 7 = 1177 7 = 168cm (rounded off)
b) Median: order the numbers: 139, 155, 160, 175, 178, 180, 190
choose the one in the middle: median = 175

c) Range = largest-smallest = 190-139 = 51
