"Bolivia is a very large

country with
tremendous resources,
but it's essentially an
under-populated and
under-skilled country.
The vast majority of the
population doesn't yet
have the skills needed
to develop the country
on a sustained basis.
Right now,
development is very
skewed.
Landlocked Bolivia sits astride the Andes in the west-central part of the
South American continent. With an area of 1,098,581 square kilometers, the
country is about the size of Texas and California combined, or twice the size
of Spain. Bolivia has 6,083 kilometers of land boundaries, which adjoin five
countries.

mountains and Altiplano in the
west, the semitropical Yungas
and temperate valleys of the
eastern mountain slopes, and
the tropical lowlands or plains
(llanos) of the eastern lowlands,
or Oriente.

However, in the altiplano and highland valleys, where subsistence farming is

by far the most common activity, depletion of available resources occurs at
an alarming rate. This is due to a number of different factors including
erosion by wind and water, overuse of crop and pasture lands, slash and
burn farming techniques, and a loss of biodiversity as populations spread to
cover more land. Income generation, health, and food security in these
regions are dependant upon the quality of existing natural resources.
Improper use of these resources and constant depletion is causing a
progressive destruction of the natural environment.

UNIVERSIDAD MAYOR DE SAN SIMN

UMSS is the biggest second university of Bolivia. Founded in 1832,
inside the System of Public Universities of Bolivia, located in
Cochabamba, which is the third party the biggest city of Bolivia,
placed in a valley to 2,570 m/snm and placed among the mountains
and the low tropical lands.
UMSS teach the majority of the academic fields to level of pre
degree and also it(he,she) has a school of postdegree. It is shaped
by 9 faculties and 3 university schools, where the ESFOR is a part
of this one. At this time we have on more than 47,000 students that
they are present at more than 80 educational offers offered in
UMSS of which, near 50 they correspond(fit) to careers of pregrado
to level of top technician and licentiate and fence to 20 they are in
the level of masterado and one is starting penetrating into
doctorate.

ESFOR
A forestry engineer education was established in 2000 at UMSS under
the Faculty of Agriculture, where the forestry school (Escuela de
Ciencias Forestales (ESFOR)) has educated forestry technicians
since 1980, until recently with the assistance of GTZ. At present, the
annual intake of students on each of the educations for forestry
engineer and forest technician is around 50.
Emerging needs for professional foresters lead in 2000 to the
formation of an education of forest engineers and later in 2001 also a
postgraduate education. The latter offers diploma and specialization
courses with short duration in sustainable management of tropical
forests with direct relations to the forestry sector.
ESFOR has a considerable and well-maintained infrastructure in the
form of office space, classrooms, laboratories, vehicles, etc.

It also has a well-educated and well-organised
human resource base including 6 full-time teachers
and a number of part-time teachers. Its major field
facilities are at Valle Sajta where 6,000 ha and
physical facilities provide the basis for conducting
field research and training of students. ESFOR is
situated at the nothern boundary of Cochabamba.
One of the ESFOR main objetives are to promote
technology transfer and conservation practices that
allow farmers to effectively increase productivity
and incomes, while protecting land and water
resources for future generations with increse the
activities of research.
