matter truthfully, without artificiality and avoiding artistic
conventions, and supernatural elements.

Realism in Ice-Candy man

The factor of realism is

transparent in the
novel. Bepsi Sidhwa
has used literary
devise of realism to
expose various ins and
outs of Pakistani
society.

Objective reality
Bepsi Sidhwa presented objective reality in
Ice-Candy Man as she
Recreates the ethos of the partition
Shows effect of partition on characters
lives
And even ignored the experimental realm
of the highly victimized women i.e. AYAH ,
she was not provided justice
this is so because that would be against
Bepsi Sidhwa plan of presenting reality
objectively

Free of superficiality and idealism

There is no idealism or superficiality
in Ice-Candy man means remained
within the extremes of realities

to create a timeless reality of her own
universe
Shows peasants as peasants
Poor people

Characters are not individuals but

communities
Sidhwa tried to explore racial,
psychologies, cultures, habits and
traits of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims.
Example
Ice-Candy man he reacts violently to
the cunningness of the Hindus, brutal
violence of Sikhs who massacred the
Muslims on the incitement of the
Hindus. Otherwise we do not find many
developed characters in the novel.

Real depiction of events

Without any superficiality

like partition of India,
papoo marriage
it was difficult book to
make.. A difficult and
painful

Neutrality

Lennys development from
childhood to adolescence occurs
with the independence of India.
All people related with
ethnicities and religions are
exposed impartially.

Realities provoking thoughts

many thought provoking
realties like lennys
passionate love for Ayah,
Lennys relationship with
her mother and
godmother

Real Pen-picture
The character in Ice-candy man
are painted in real style ,
descriptive and narrative that
common reader can sketch the
characters in the mind
i.e. Ayahs character with the real
color of words.
Ayah is a chocolate-brown and
short. Everything about her is
eighteen years old and round and
plump. Even her. Her hair pulled
back in a tight knot

Conclusion
Ice Candy man has both elements,
uplifting and heart wrenching filled with
the characters that the readers grow to
love and despise as the story unfolds with
the proceedings of the plot. It replete with
so many literary devices and the typical
Parse community of Lahore. Here, Sidhwa
has played a neutral role in describing
Hindu-Muslim riots. The one way or the
other, we can say that she is disinterested
and impartial in her exposure.
