SELF COMPACTING

CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION
In 1986, concrete capable of compaction by its own

weight with no need of vibration was proposed.

In 1988, first successful prototype of self
compacting concrete (SCC) was developed in the
University of Tokyo by Prof. K. Ozawa and Prof. H.
Okamura.
However, the gradual reduction of skilled labours in
construction industry led to the formation of SCC.

SELF COMPACTING
CONCRETE
"A highly flowable, yet stable concrete that can
spread readily into place and fill the formwork
without any consolidation and without undergoing
significant separation.
(SCC) is concrete that flows into place under its
own weight, without segregation and flow blockage.

Materials for SCC

Ordinary cement(43 or 53)grades.

Coarse Aggregate(10 to 12)mm.
Fine Aggregate smaller than(0.125)mm.
Water same using for reinforced
concrete.
Chemical Admixtures : In this
superplasticizers are essential.

Comparison of Traditional Concrete

and SCC

Mechanism for achieving

SCC
Limited aggregate content.
Low water powder ratio.
Use of super plasticizers.

Development of SCC
mixes

SCC mixes must meet the following three key

properties:
Ability to flow into and completely fill intricate
and complex forms under its own weight
Ability to pass through and bond to congested
reinforcement under its own weight
High resistance to aggregate segregation.

Examples of SCC mixes

Powder-type
VMA type
Combined-type

Test Methods For SCC

18

Good surface finish

The SCC off the form finish is typically better than that
achieved with traditional concrete and methods, and can be
exceptional, reducing the need for rework and repairs.

19

Noise
The vibrator is usually the noisiest machine during a
pour. It is eliminated using Self compacting concrete.

20

Labour

Since compaction is not necessary, labour is greatly

reduced. If the SCC is being pumped, the whole pour
can often be left to the pump operator and hoseman.

21

Ideal for congested

reinforcement
In the case where the reinforcement is congested
self compacting concrete is used.

22

Need for SCC?

23

Some special considerations

More care and experience.
Stringent mix design.
Sensitive to moisture content of sand.
Longer mixing time.
More sensitive to cold weather.
Hardening starts late but hardens fast.
Early drying of surface due to no bleeding.
Mix design is still partially Trial and error
This demands frequent sampling and testing.
24

Indian scenario of SCC

Delhi Metro project used scc in large
scale for Dome construction.
Bandra-worli sea link project used high
volume fly ash scc.
Kaiga nuclear power plant used scc for
column beam joints where it is heavily
reinforced.

Conclusion
SCC is considered as the most revolutionary
development in concrete construction for several
decades.
SCC appears to have significant potential for its use
in the concrete industry.
As compared with conventional concrete the self
compacting concrete gives higher strengths on long
duration.

30

When self compacting concrete becomes so widely

used that it is seen as the standard concrete rather
than a special concrete.
In addition, new structural design and construction
systems making full use of self-compacting concrete
should be introduced.
Even though self compacting concrete is more
expensive it can be used where labour availability is
less, surface area is more, sound is restricted, where
steel is congested, accesses for placing of vibrator is
difficult.
