Introduction
HSUPA = High Speed Uplink Packet
Access
Specified in 3GPP release 6 as Enhanced Uplink
System of new Air Interface channels
Uplink data rates up to 5,76 Mbit/s per user
Backwards compatible with earlier 3GPP releases

Functionality
HSUPA has more in common with a R99 DCH than with HSDPA
3GPP terminology for HSUPA is Enhanced DCH (E-DCH)

Notes:

3GPP allows multi-code transmission for R99 DCH but in practise only 1 code is used
The HSDPA user plane channel cannot use soft handover, although the associated DCH may use soft handover
RAS06 uses a 10 ms Transmission Time Interval (TTI) for HSUPA to improve coverage performance

HSUPA UE Categories
HSUPA uses BPSK modulation with multicode
transmission to achieve high datarates Initially only Cat.1 and Cat.3 is
Theoretical peak bit rate up to 5.76 Mbpsexpected to be supported
widely
Initially only max. 1.46 Mbps expected

HSUPA Bit Rate Selection

UE selects bit rate according to the E-DPDCH transmit power offset granted by the

Node B
Larger power offsets allow the use of smaller spreading factors and higher bit rates

Intermediate RLC bit

rates can also be
selected by the UE
