NATIONAL GEOPHYSICAL MAPPING

AN IMPORTANT INPUT IN BASE LINE
GEOSCIENCE DATA
D. K. Saha
Dy. Director General

OBJECTIVE OF NGPM
NGPM was started in the year 2002 with the
objective to carryout systematic geophysical
mapping by gravity and magnetic methods for
the delineation of subsurface structures like
faults, folds etc., in the study area and for
targeting favorable zones for detailed mineral
exploration.
To generate the integrated gravity map of 1
mGal contour interval.
Converting the geophysical anomalies into
structural signatures and estimating the depth
persistence of geological bodies.

PRESENT STATUS OF NGPM

A total of 3,31,380.8 sq. km has been covered
under NGPM mapping till January, 2016.
Geological
Survey of India is working
continuously on mapping of remaining 22,403
sq km area, out of proposed 72,800 sq km of
FS:2015-16, to be completed by March, 2016.
Entire Core-OGP area will completely be
mapped by 2017-18 at a capacity of mapping of
1 lakh sq km per year.

FUTURE INITIATIVES UNDER NGPM

Integration of NGPM data along with NGCM data
& geology to prepare an integrated map.
Preparation of gravity magnetic map of Core
OGP areas for the better understanding of
occurrence of minerals at the places.
Compilation of data and preparation of gravity
magnetic maps on degree sheet basis.
To generate the baseline geophysical data such
as gravity, magnetic data which will serve as
input for detailed studies.
11

FUTURE INITIATIVES UNDER NGPM

Identification of sub-surface structures and
creation of an integrated map which can be
used in disaster management studies in the
interest of public.
Re-defining the OGP
perspective of view.
