A great Greek philosopher born in


Athens in 469 B.C.
His father was a sculptor and mother a
midwife.
Received elementary knowledge of
literature ,music and gymnastics.
Initially followed the occupation of his
father.
Later indulged himself in philosophy.

The era of Socrates

Lived in the times of Plato,


Aristophane andXenophon.
During the time of transition from
the height of Athenian empire to its
decline.
It was when Athens was in
continuous war with Sparta.

His life

Socrates started as a sculptor.


Served as infantryman in war with
Sparta.
Spent most of his adult life in
marketplace and public places.
He enjoyed life immensely and had
a ready wit and good sense of
humor.

His death

His intellect made the high


Athenians against him.
He was tried for misleading the
people of Athens.
Even had a chance to escape but
he denied it.
He was sentenced to death by
drinking a cup of hemlock.
