Determining
Mole Ratios in
a Chemical Rxn
CHE 111 - Experiment 3

Points of Clarification
Flow charts for labs are due at the start of the lab
i.e. FC for EXP 3 is due today, data sheets and questions for EXP

3 are due next week

Do not hand in a flow chart the week following the lab. It will

be marked late and get a grade of zero

For next week

Formula)

Experimental
Summary
Purpose of todays lab:
To determine enthalpy changes in several chemical reactions
Determine a reactions stoichiometry
Determine if an acid is monoprotic or polyprotic

Acids & Bases:

Protism
Acids and bases have specific ions that make them as such
Acid = H+ ion
Base = OH- ion

The number of each ion in an acid or base dictates its protism

1 - monoprotic - HCl, NaOH
2 diprotic - H2SO4, Ca(OH)2
3 triprotic - H3PO4

Acid-Base Reactions
H+ ions (from acids) and OH- ions (from bases) will always

bind in a 1:1 molar ratio

Products are always water and a salt.

You will be using the data collected in todays experiment to

determine the protism of the acid used in the lab

What You Will Need

200 mL acid
Choose either unknown acid #1 or unknown acid #2. Be sure to

record the unknown #!

200 mL NaOH
Calorimeter
LabQuest
Temperature Probe

Important Info to
record:
Identity of Unknown Acids
Unknown Acid #1 = 1.0 M Citric Acid
Unknown Acid #2 = 1.0 M Acetic Acid

Data Sheets and Post-lab Questions

Use the handout that you receive today NOT the pages in your

manual.
You will notice you are only doing 5 trials. The volumes needed for

each trial are specified.

Setting Up Your LabQuest

Power up the LabQuest and plug in your temperature probe

Setting Up Your LabQuest

You should see a temperature reading
Use the stylus to click on the graph icon

Setting Up Your Calorimeter

Check a calorimeter cup/lid

out from the stockroom

Obtain a temperature probe

for the LabQuest

Set up the calorimeter and

probe as shown

Add your designated

volume of NaOH to the

calorimeter

Procedure Collecting
Data

Running Your Reaction

Temp of NaOH by itself
Addition of acid
Final temp of reaction mixture

Calculating Temperature Change

Examine temperature plateaus
Highest temperature lowest temperature

To start a new trial

Press the play button again
This will bring you to the

screen below

When you select discard,

data will begin collecting

automatically for a new trial

Treating The Products

Pour each reaction mixture

into a large waste beaker

Deal with waste at end.

Test pH of this waste product.

If pH is between 6-8, product

can go down sink.

If not, pour solution into

designated waste container.

Special
Considerations
Goggles and gloves are to be worn at all times
Handle NaOH and the unknown acid with care
Both chemicals are toxic and corrosive.

Make sure to return the LabQuests to the cart and plug them

in when finished.

Be sure to clean lab benches before leaving

Be sure to rinse out your calorimeters and towel dry them at

the end of the lab, and return them to the stockroom

WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE LEAVING

Dont leave without picking up your graded reports that I

have.
