RURAL EDUCATION IN INDIA

INTRODUCTION
Education is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing
poverty and inequality. Education is equally key to enhance Indias
competitiveness in the global economy.

Education is universally acknowledged as one of the key inputs for


balanced socioeconomic development.

When we compared government schools to private schools


quality is major issue.

Quality and access to education is the major concern in rural


schools as there are fewer committed teachers.

Lack of proper text books and learning material in the schools.

OVERALL PICTURE

Education is provided by public sector


Child education is Compulsory
35% of population is still illiterate
Only 15% of Indian students reach high school
Just 7% graduate

Education
Implemented in partnership with State Governments
to cover the entire country and address the needs of
192 million children

DATA FROM SSA


Attendance Rate Of Students Was 68.5% And 75.7%
At Primary And Upper Primary Levels Respectively.
The Average Attendance Rate Of Teachers Was
81.7% And 80.5% Respectively In Primary And
Upper Primary Schools.
The Attendance Rate Of Girls Was A Little Higher
Than That Of Boys.
Boys 69%
Girls 70.6%

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
The Positives Areas.
Participation Rapid education in enrollment rates, atleast in
primary schools
Equity Social disparity which was very high till 90s has been
reduced significantly
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan(SSA) get most of the credit for the
improvement in elementary education.

THE PROBLEM AREAS


Drop Out rate :-48% in elementary education(std1 to std 8)
mainly because of socio-economic reasons.
Regional Disparity :- states like UP, Bihar are way behind in
terms of gross enrollment ratio(GER),drop out.
Infrastructure :Teachers absenteeism24% schools in India do not have proper school building.
8% schools lack drinking water facility.

Quality Education :According to Annual Status Of Education Report(ASER)


survey 60% of children aged between 7 to 12 cannot read a
simple paragraph.

SECONDARY EDUCATION(std 9-12)


The Problem Areas..
Paticipation :-at the lower secondary level(9-10) the gross
enrollment rate is 52% while senior secondary level(11-12) is
28%(05-06)
Number of secondary school are atmost half in number of
primary schools

INTERESTING AND ALARMING STATISTICS


31% of std3 children cannot read words in their own language.
70% of std3 children cannot solve a 2digit substraction
problem.
72.5% of std5 children cannot do a simple division problem.
51.8% of std5 children cannot read a std2 level text.
