INTRODUCTION
Life expectancy is steadily increasing, but cities are
no longer safe nor friendly neighbors a certainty.
Alternative housing for the aged is a practical
lifestyle solution that developers are now ready to
provide. The fading joint family system in India and
other innumerable factors have given rise to westinspired phenomena of old age homes. Surprising
cost of living and scanty return on savings have
almost pushed these senior citizens on roads. Such
an act has triggered the security net of the
helpless, which has almost vanished in many states
in India with Kerala topping the list. Elders have
started walking out of their own home in search of
a journey that promises peace, joy and celebration
of life with a group of people who share the same
boat of life (the wrecked one). However not may
rather none of them receive it.

A growing number of financially

independent senior citizens now
prefer to stay in retirement resorts
instead of languishing in the
quintessential old-age homes that
they feel are overcrowded and
unsafe. Also Insecurity, loneliness
and lack of companionship some
of lifes hard-to-swallow problems
become a daily reality for these
elderly persons whose children
either settle abroad, or in some
other state, for better career
opportunities.
The concept of retirement resorts or complexes is gradually
emerging as the most viable option among the senior members of
society who are financially independent. They want to live with
dignity and, above all, want to be secure.

Townships and residential colonies

exclusively for senior citizens are
now coming up in the state where
they can relocate and spend the
sunset of their lives without
bothering about paying electricity
bills, cooking and getting prompt
medical care.
It is this combination of physical
and emotional satisfaction that
todays old age homes strive to
provide.
From an era where old-age homes were synonymous with charitable
institutions for the indigent and orphaned elderly, we moved some
years ago to the far more refined paid homes, where amenities were
good and services like on-site medical check-ups and transport
arrangements were provided. Now, old age homes are set to enter a
third phase of evolution.

PROJECT INFO
The project is initiated by the Saint Hardyal Educational and
Orphans Welfare Society (SHEOWS). Who aspire
to develop a Old Age Home (Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram ) in 6
acre at Garhmukteshwar, Uttar Pradesh.

CITY CONTEXT
Garhmukteshwar is situated on the National Highway 24 joining
New Delhi with Lucknow. The town is 5 km (3.1 mi) from the
Ganges River and around 100 km (62 mi) from New Delhi, making
it the closest major place of habitation to that river from India's
capital city.
It is a self contained world where people can live, work, learn and
play in harmony with nature.

FACILITIES TO BE
Doctor round the clock, nurses, care takers for
PROVIDED
every ward;

Park for recreational activities, walking;

Group sessions, individual counseling sessions,
spiritual sessions for healthy mental health;
Special care for the immobile old aged;
Libraries, social play room, vocational training
room etc., for the benefit of old aged;
Honey production unit which the old aged will
support, which will improve the self esteem of
the aged.
Nutrition and medicines will be from organic
farming
Milk production from the Cows in the Ashram

The project Old Age Home (Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram )

is proposed by SHEOWS.
The Main Reason Behind Proposing Such retirement community
is to provide senior living homes to the retired as well as elderly
people and also providing basic facilities and infrastructure for
them.
Residents in the old age home do not experience social
isolation, desolation, social loneliness and emotional loneliness.
They will be engaged in different activities of the old age
home in overcoming loneliness, which improves their health and
enhances their self esteem.
In an old age home, they meet new friends (co-residents) of
their age and share their experiences.
Residents will have self respect and lead a satisfactory and
peaceful life without being a burden on their families.
Residents are in constant touch with their family members.
Their children can visit them often or as per their convenience.
Sometimes they call up their parents and ask about their
health.

To create energy efficient and bio climatically responsive built form.
The bioclimatically approach seeks better occupant comfort.
To create homes that are oriented in the direction where it can best
respond to the climate of the region.
Synthesis the best of modern planning with the wisdom of
traditional systems which explicitly reflects the character of the
region as well as satisfy the current and future needs.
To create a visual connection of the community spaces with the rest
of the society.
To design spaces to follow certain social, economic and sustainable
principles that would help to further support elder care.
To provide flexibility into the designing of community spaces so as it
provides opportunity to the residents to perform various activities in
the same space.

efficient circulation .

scale and spaces to generate responses.
