Components of a system
SENSORS
Sensor Models
Suppose the output of a sensor for some physical quantity x(t) is given
by f(x(t)):

Sensor Ranges
If the operating range of a sensor is (L, H),
To get an idea of how precise the measurements of a sensor can be, one
defines its precision p as the smallest difference between two
distinguishable sensor readings of the physical quantity.
VARIETY OF
SENSORS
Photoresistors
Light sensitive resistors whose resistance
decreases as the intensity of light they are
exposed to increases. They are made of
high resistance semiconductor material.
When light hits the device, the photons
give electrons energy. This makes them
jump into the conductive band and
thereby conduct electricity.
Photoresistor - Applications
Commonly used as light sensors.
Infrared Sensor
The TSOP 17XX is the most commonly used IR receiver. The last two
digits indicate the frequency of the modulated IR signals that it
responds to so that other signals in the environment do not interfere.
A photodiode can also be used as a receiver, but it doesnt have
response only for some specific frequency.
The TSOP gives an active low output.
It can also be used for colour detection.
Camera
Vision processing requires a lot of RAM, and even low resolution
cameras may give lots of data, parsing through which can be difficult.
Cameras draw in around 0.1 A current, the current rating of the USB
hub to which they are attached must be checked.

3. Magnetometer
Flex Sensors
Measure the amount of deflection
caused by bending, also called bend
sensors.
The bending must occur around a
radius of curvature, as by some angle
at a point isnt effective and if done by
more than 90 deg., may permanently
damage the sensor.
Ultrasonic Sensor
These are very commonly
used for obstacle detection.
These interface easily with an
Arduino board.
Rotary Encoder
They convert the angular position of a shaft to a
digital/analog value.
They may represent the value in absolute or
incremental terms. The advantage of absolute
encoders is that they maintain the information
of the position even when power is removed,
and this is available immediately on its
application.
Voltage Sensors
An Operational Amplifier (LM741) can be used as a voltage sensor as it
can be made to work as a comparator(buffer) that can give us an idea
of whether the applied voltage is above/below a certain value.
