DECEMBER 1970: General Yahya Khan had called for


an election for a national assembly to draft a new
constitution for Pakistan
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Bengali leader and head of

General Khan and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto head of the
leading West-Pakistan based party
MARCH 1971: Gen. Khan unleashed a military attack
on East Pakistan

DECEMBER 1971: India seized the opportunity to


deliver a blow against West Pakistan and entered the
fray.
India scored a decisive victory over West Pakistan
and with it came the birth of a new nation,

PresidentRichard M. Nixonand Henry A. Kissinger,
his national security adviser, supported Pakistan

The India-Pakistan war gave Nixon, who suffered from


an incurable fear of appearing weak, the opportunity
to show his mettle.
Nixon wanted to show the Vietnamese his toughness
and his resolve to stick with allies
Washington and Beijing balked at extending
diplomatic recognition of independent Bangladesh
but eventually they did so.

For Pakistan, the 1971 war had a sobering


effect.
