STRATEGIES

Speed reading
Speed readingis any of several techniques
used to improve one's ability to read quickly.
Method Skimming and scanning
- Meta guiding

Skimming is process of speed reading that involves

visually searching the sentences of a page for clues to
meaning. For some people, this comes naturally, but
is usually acquired by practice. Skimming is usually
seen more in adults than in children. It is conducted at
a higher rate (700 words per minute and above) than
normalreadingfor comprehension (around 200230
wpm), and results in lower comprehension
rates,especially with information-rich reading
material.
Scanningis the process where one actively looks for
information using amind-map or data.
Meta guidingis the visual guiding of the eye using a
finger or pointer, such as a pen, in order for the eye to
move faster along the length of a passage of text.

Types of reading
There are 3 types of reading
Mental reading (Subvocalization): sounding out
each word internally, as reading to yourself. This
is the slowest form of reading.
Auditory reading: hearing out the read words.
This is a faster process.
Visual reading: understanding the meaning of
the word, rather than sounding or hearing. This
is the fastest process.

K-W-L
KNOWLEDGE--LEARN

DEFINITION OF K-W-L
OGLE (1986) SAYS K-W-L
IS AN INSTRUCTIONAL
READING STRATEGY
THAT IS USED TO GUIDE
STUDENTS THROUGH A
TEXT.

Purposes
- Elicit students prior knowledge of
the topic of the text.
- Sets a purpose for reading.
- Helps students to monitor
comprehension

HOW TO USE THE K-W-L STRATEGY?

1.Choose a text. This strategy works best with expository texts.
2.Create a K-W-L chart.
K

3. Students need to brainstorm words, terms or phrases they associated with a topic
in order to fill in the K column.
1.Ex: Tell me everything you know about topic
4. Ask an alternative question for generating ideas for the W
2.Ex: What do you want to learn about this topic

column.

5. Fill the L columns after reading. You should look the answers to the questions in
your W column.

What is gravity?

Gravity is the force that

pulls objects towards
Earth.

It makes things fall.

Why is there less gravity
on the moon?

There is less gravity on

the moon.

The amount of gravity

there is depends on the
masses of the objects
involved. The moon is a
lot less massive than the
earth, so there is less
