FAN COIL UNIT

VARANAL, JHOEMEL S.

A Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is a simple device consisting of a heating

and/or cooling heat exchanger or 'coil' and fan. A fan coil unit is a diverse
device sometimes using ductwork, and is used to control the temperature
in the space where it is installed.
It is controlled either by a manual on/off switch or by a thermostat,
which controls the throughput of water to the heat exchanger using a
control valve and/or the fan speed.
Due to their simplicity and flexibility, fan coil units can be more
economical to install than ducted 100% fresh air systems (VAV) or central
heating systems with air handling units or chilled beams.
Sometimes called terminal units

Fan Coil Units can be oriented into three position:

Horizontal;
Vertical and;
Vertical Stack
And can be split up into 3 types:
Exposed
Recessed
Concealed

*Automatic control valve A flow control valve regulates the flow or pressure of a fluid.
Flow Control valvesnormally respond to signals generated by independent devices
such as flow meters or temperature gauges.

Difference between FCU and AHU(Multizone

unit)
FCU
AHU
Uses motor
Stand Alone Unit
Not ducted
Single Zone
Uses Direct Drive Fans
Runs on 200-2000 cfm

Uses Heating and Cooling Coil

In reliance to exterior fan
Can be ducted or without
Ducted to multiple zones
More complex components
Runs on 10000-30000cfm

AHU system treats outside air while FCUs basically recycle or re-circulates the air.
FCU are often observed to be noisier than the AHU.
