About Refarming
Definition
Refarming is a strategy of reuse their frequency resources and introduce new radio
communication technologies to improve the spectral efficiency and data throughput.
Examples
1- Refarming for Remove GSM-R Band

It is necessary to ensure that the original GSM network coverage and capacity, but also to ensure the quality of U900's new
network.
How to reduce co-channel and adjacent-channel interference between GSM900 and UMTS900 networks, And also had
below advantages.
Gains in coverage
UMTS900 has a 7 dB path loss advantage over UMTS2100 in free space conditions. This advantage can be more than 20
dB in indoor scenarios
Gains in capacity
In coverage-limited and non-interference-limited scenarios ,UMTS900 has larger throughput and capacity than UMTS2100
since UMTS900 has higher receive levels and Ec/Io.

After the Refarming, the GSM frequency resources are greatly reduced. In this case, how to
smoothly transfer GSM900 traffic to the GSM1800 or UMTS900 network to keep the GSM
network quality (GSM Traffic Transfer Solution )
2.
Whether the antenna of the GSM900 network can be reused by the UMTS900 network with
network quality kept and cost saved (Antenna Solutions )
3.
How to balance traffic load among the GSM, UMTS, and LTE networks after the UMTS900
deployment (UMTS Inter-Carrier Bearer Solution )

BCCHs = M
TCH= N
1- None FH or BBH
Z = The frequency reuse coefficient of the BCCH = M
Y = The frequency reuse coefficient of the TCH = N/(X1)
Average CellTrxNum =(Q -Z)/ Y + 1
2- RF FH
Z = The frequency reuse coefficient of the BCCH = M
Y = The frequency reuse coefficient of the TCH = 3*(X-1)*N
Average CellTrxNum = (Q -Z) / (Y/2) + 1
Allocating frequencies to BCCHs and TCHs in combined mode
In this case, BCCHs and TCHs use the same frequencies, the frequency reuse coefficients of
two are the same.
The frequency reuse coefficient of the BCCH & TCH = W/X
Average CellTrxNum = Q / (W/X)

Antenna Solutions
In the Refarming scenario, the UMTS system is built on the existing GSM system, Which can reduce the
network construction cost of operators;
But should be considered the impact of the co-antenna system on the performance of the GSM and UMTS

Antenna Solutions
Impact on Network Performance
For rural areas,
Due to the site distance is large and the traffic volume is small.
And due to the UMTS use the antenna engineering parameters of the GSM network.
Both causing little impact on UMTS network performance.

BA List Preparation
for preform scan of new BCCH frequencies should to configure it in BA list for each
refarming cells. but due to high number of defined neighbor, will face problem to
configure it so should remove redundancy neighbor then collect how many round to scan
all BCCH frequencies, using below sheet as shown below.

during rounds should collect MR from below path to avoid missing some MR as its periodically
removed.
