The Republic
of Dagestan
Dagestan is one of the distinctive and beautiful republics
of Russian Federation, located between the Caspian sea and the
Main Caucasian mountain range. Dagestan is bordered by
Azerbaijan to the south, Georgia to the west, across the sea with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
The total length of the territory from north to south is about 400
km, the area - 50.3 thousand square kilometers, with a
population of 2,910,371 people. At present Dagestan is
composed of 42 administrative districts, 10 towns and 14
urban-type settlements.
Dagestan is one of the most ethnically compound regions:
more than 100 nationalities and peoples, including 40
indigenous, representing large linguistic families and groups
are settled here.
The climate is hot and dry in the summer but the winters
are harsh in the mountain areas.
Average January temperature: +2 C (36 F)
Average July temperature: +26 C (79 F)
The republic has 11 state theatres, more than 15 museums, the
State Academic Honoured Dance Ensemble of Dagestan
Lezginka.
Crafts of Dagestan auls are world known for bronze
embossing, textile manufacture, and silk spinning, among them
Kubachi (processing of metal), Balkhar (painted ceramics),
Untsukul (silver notching made on wood), Derbent, Tabasaran
(carpet weaving).

Makhachkala the Capital of

Dagestan
Makhachkala is the largest economic, scientific and cultural center
of Dagestan and of the southern Russia. The city located in the
southern part of Russia on the shore of the Caspian Sea. It was
founded in 1857.
The city has an international airport, seaport, railway and bus
stations, museums, theatres, sports facilities and tourist infrastructure.
There are mosques, church and synagogue in the town.
Dagestan scientific center of Russian university of Science (RAS),
nearly 20 scientific-research institutes, many higher educational
institutions, universities and their branches are situated in
Makhachkala.
Students from all around the world come to the city for higher
education in the field of Medicine, Engineering and Jurisprudence.
