How has 3M maintained leadership
development even while cutting jobs?
In a 2% recession, you have 98% of the business
left. In a 5% recession you have 95% of the
business left. You have to focus on what's left, not
on what's gone. You're unlikely to do that well if you
back off on leadership development.
What's the key to develop leaders?
There are things you are born with. You can't
develop intelligence. Maybe you can't plant
leadership in a person, but you certainly can
enhance it in a person

1) Are leaders important?

YES!
Reasons:
They define companys purpose
They provide guide markers for
others to follow
They bring out the potential and
passion
They refine the skills of employees
They build the value-system
No ship can set sail without a
captain, and the same is true in

Leadership developmentis defined as
a program or activity that makes people
become betterleaders.
Why is it important?
The lack of right and proper leadership
development is the most important factor
that has caused both the success and
demise of corporations

Homeostasis
Homeostasis is never good,
especially for business.
Whats homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the tendency of a
system or organism to stabilize, stay
the same.

In business, in order to grow and


progress, its necessary to leave the
comfort zone.
But every time you do, homeostasis
kicks in, slowing your progress or
halting it altogether.
Homeostasis often shows up as fear.

Why leadership development fails?


Training is the #1 reason leadership
development fails
You dont train leaders you develop
them!
Training attempts to standardize by
blending to a norm and adjusting to
the status quo, development strives
to call out the unique and
differentiate by shattering the status
quo

Therefore..
Training is something leaders dread and
will try and avoid, whereas they will
embrace and look forward to development.
It is impossible to have an enterprise which
is growing and evolving if its leadership is
not.
Companies and business organizations, no
matter what the size, need to develop their
leaders and emerging leaders in leadership
skills.

Handling and leading (not managing)


the generation Y people alone needs
a brand new set of leadership skills.
Invest in leadership development
and ensure future leaders who can
bring your business to the next level.
Remember: Success without
succession is failure.

2) Is a positive work culture really


essential?

Every organization has its own culture.


Since employees spend a major part of their
day at the workplace, their organizations
work culture obviously affects both their
work lives as well as their personal lives.
Organizational culture refers to the beliefs,
ideologies, principles and values that the
individuals of an organization share.
Positive work culture contributes enormously
to the success of an organization.

Why is this work culture more


necessary today?
Todays organizations struggle with two big
changes
a new generation of employees(who come
with their own information, needs, expectations,
and beliefs which are very different from the
ones in older generations; the need to feel
valued; to need to contribute)
rapidrestructuringof businesses (increased
number of mergers, restructuring, and rebranding of companies. This change is hard for
the employees because it brings along obstacles
and interference in their work)

How to shape our own unique work


culture?
Establish strong and clear
corporate values and goals.
Encourage autonomy and
entrepreneurship
Create a feeling of shared property
Pick employees that fit your
company culture
Make it positive!
