Circles and Spheres

In this lesson,
I will teach you
about
Circles and Spheres

Circles

Circle is a polygon that has

infinite sides or no sides
Here is a circle

A perfect example of a circle

is a wheel

Parts of the Circle

TheRadiusis the distance from the

center to the edge.
TheDiameterstarts at one side of the
circle, goes through the center and ends
on the other side.
TheCircumferenceis the distance around
the edge of the circle.

Radius-

The black line is the radius.

Diameter-

The black line is the diameter.

Circumference-

The orange line is the circumference.

Remember that the radius is always half

of the diameter ,thus the diameter is
always double the radius
Formula:
D= r2
R= d/2

R=Radius
D=Diameter

Fun Fact:
When we divide the circumference by the
diameter we get 3.141592654...
which is the number(Pi).
So when the diameter is 1, the
circumference is 3.141592654...

The number is so long that we just

use it as 3.14 or 3.1416(because when you
round off 3.141592654... to its nearest
ten thousandths you get 3.1416)
In this lesson we will use 3.14 as our

I told you a while ago that is equal to

3.14 and diameter is twice of the radius
and the radius is half the diameter.
Now we will use that information
to find the circumference

I told you a while ago that the

circumference is the distance around the
edge of a circle.
To get the Circumference, just simply
multiply the with the diameter. Take
note that the radius is half the diameter
so when the radius is given just simply
multiply the radius with 2.

Formula of Circumference:
C= d or C= r2
Any will work out fine!
Example:
The diameter is 4cm so the answer is
12.56cm
1

3. 14
4
12.56

Now you know how to get the

circumference of the circle. I will now
teach you how to get the area of the
circle.
Area is the size of the surface.
To get the area of a circle just simply
multiply radius to itself and multiply it to

Area of a Circle
Formula:
A=rr r=radius
When the diameter is given just simply
divide the diameter by 2 so you can get
the radius and continue on with the
process. The answer should be always
squared

Example:
The diameter is 12m so the area is ???
(12/2)
6
363.14
113.04m is the area

Remember:
A circle is a flat surface that has no
sides or has infinite sides
The radius is the length from the center
of the circle to its edge
The diameter starts at one side of the
circle, goes through the center and ends
on the other side.
The formula on getting the
circumference is d or r2

Remember:
The formula for area of a circle is r
or (d/2)
The circumference is the distance
around the edge of the circle.

Spheres

A sphere is a round
three dimensional
solid figure.

Example of a Sphere
Here is a sphere
A perfect example of
a sphere is a ball

A sphere rotating:

Earth is not a sphere it is just a spheroid,

it is nearlya sphere, except that it is
squashed a little at the poles.
A spheroid just misses out on being a
sphere because it isn't perfect in one
direction (in the Earth's case: NorthSouth)

A sphere has the same

parts as a circle. It is just
more three dimensional.

Surface Area is the area of a

three dimensional solid figure.
Now I will show you how to get
the surface area of a sphere.

To get the surface area of a sphere just

multiply radius to itself and multiply the
answer there to 4 and multiply it to or
you could just simply multiply 12.56 to
radius because when you multiply 4 to
the answer will be 12.56.If you dont
believe at me, why dont you try it ?

Formula for the Surface Area of a Sphere

SA= 4 r2 or SA= 12.56 r
Remember when the diameter is given you
can divide it into two so you can get the
radius.

Example: The radius is 5 cm so

SA= 4 r
4 5
4 25
100
314cm
So the surface area of the
sphere is 314cm

Now I have taught you how to get the

surface area of a sphere, I will now teach
you how to get the volume of a sphere.
Volume is the amount of 3-dimensional
space an object occupies.
It is like how much water the object
occupy.

Now to get the volume of a

sphere you simply multiply radius
to radius and to radius again or
radius(radius cubed) and
multiply it to 4 and now multiply it
to and finally divide it by 3.

Formula of Volume of Sphere:

V= r4
3
Radius= Diameter/2

Example: The radius is 6m

6664/3
3664/3
2164/3
864/3
2,712.96/3
904.32m is the volume of the sphere
The answer is always cubed.

Fun Fact:
Of all the shapes, a sphere has the
smallest surface area for a volume. Or put
another way it can contain the greatest
volume for a fixed surface area.

Remember:
That a sphere
is a round three dimensional solid figure.
is perfectly symmetrical
have all points on the surface are the
same distance from the center
Spheroid-just misses out on being a
sphere because it isn't perfect in one
direction. An example of it is Earth

Remember:
That the formula on getting the surface
area of a sphere is 4r
The formula for the volume of the
sphere is r4/3

Now you know everything you need to
