Tutorial Week 8
To what extent does the use of
various pedagogical methods
help teachers in creating a
culturally-friendly environment?

Definition:
Pedagogical methods: The method
and practice of teaching, especially
as an academic subject or theoretical
concept.

What are the types of

pedagogical methods?

Khan's (2000) list of methods and strategies

focusses on 20 major "natural types" that he
develops under the header "pedagogical" in his
eight-components framework for e-leanirng:

Presentation
Exhibits
Demonstration
Drill and Practice
Tutorials
Games
Story Telling
Simulations

Culturally-friendly environment:
Teachers know the diverse racial,
ethnic, socio-economic and
cultural backgrounds of their
students and embed this knowledge
throughout the curriculum to foster
high levels of student learning.

Build relationships with students.

- Developing an understanding of students' lives also
enables the teacher to increase the relevance of lessons
and make examples more meaningful.
Consider students' cultures and language skills
when developing learning objectives and
instructional activities.
- Facilitate comparable learning opportunities for
students with differing characteristics. For example,
consider opportunities for students who differ in
appearance, race, sex, disability, ethnicity, religion,
socioeconomic status, or ability.

DIVERSITY
Classrooms with different backgrounds,
nationalities and faith can lead to great
topics and discussions based on
tolerance and respects.

Encourage Open Classroom

Discussion
Prompt students to ask questions by
using open-ended statements, such as
Would anyone like to share a different
opinion or perspective?
Avoid singling out individual students or
putting anyone on the spot, particularly
when discussing culturally or personally
sensitive issues. For example, a student
will feel pressured if it is assumed they
can speak on behalf of all people from
their country or culture of origin.

Learners and Learning at the Centre

Teachers are flexible and adaptable
in their use of programs and
strategies

All Children Are Different,

Identify which method is suitable to
our students.
manage the differences among our
children by recognizing their
strengths and weaknesses.

Variety of methods give a chance for students

to :
-Learn to interact actively and happily with
their classmates and teachers.
- They learn to enjoy being with others who are
different from themselves, including how to be
sensitive to and adapt to these differences.
- All children learn together and value their
relationships, no matter what their
backgrounds or abilities.
