ABOUT SONALI BANK LIMITED..


Sonali Bank Ltd is the largest state owned commercial bank in Bangladesh. It was founded in 1972
and was incorporated in June 3, 2007. It has now around 1300 branches operating in Bangladesh.
Pradip Kumar Dutta is the CEO and Managing Director of this bank. Head office of Sonali Bank
Limited is located in Motijheel, Dhaka.

Education: The bank provides direct assistance to the poor students at rural areas at their

education sector.

CSR PRACTICE OF SONALI BANK LIMITED

HIV/AIDS Assistance Program: SBL has taken a program for supporting HIV/AIDS positive women and children by

providing medicines, clinical support, food supplement and other essentials. Under this program treatment cards were
already distributed to 23HIV/AIDS positive patients among them 03 are children. Tk.17,25,000.00(Taka seventeen lac
twenty five thousand) has already sanctioned for implementation of the program to support 23 HIV positive patients .

Smile Brighter Program: Boys and girls suffering from cleft-lip and palate whose parents are incapable to bear the

operation cost of cleft lip. SBLF has taken the initiative to bring back smile on the face of the boys and girlswith cleft-lip
through plastic surgery since 2003. More than 800 numbers of poor cleft-lipped boys & girls have so far been successfully
operated across the country.

Support to ACID & Dowry Victims: Under this program 400 (four hundred) helpless dowry victims and 100 (one

hundred) acid victims has already received one time donation of Tk.10,000/- per person in this year (2005) which cost
totaling Tk.50,00,000.00 (taka fifty lac) only.

Information Technology: SONALI BANK LIMITED (SBL) undertakes a project with BASIS (Bangladesh

Association of Software and Information Services) to award the best IT uses by Bangladeshi companies. In this regards,
SBLs contribution in supporting this event was 50% of the estimated cost with Tk. 6.25 Lac.

Disaster Management: SBL has donated Tk. 25 lakh for the victims of devastating landslides in Chittagong, 130

bundles of GCI sheets to Noakhali district, 700 bundles of high grade GCI sheets to Gaibandha and Rangpur districts,
distributed blankets among the cold-affected people.

ABOUT RUPALI BANK LIMITED..


Rupali Bank Ltd. was constituted with the merger of 3 (three) erstwhile commercial banks i.e.
Muslim Commercial Bank Ltd., Australasia Bank Ltd. and Standard Bank Ltd. operated in the
then Pakistan on March 26, 1972 under the Bangladesh Banks (Nationalization) Order 1972 (P.O.
No. 26 of 1972), with all their assets, benefits, rights, powers, authorities, privileges, liabilities,
borrowings and obligations. Rupali Bank worked as a nationalized commercial bank till
December13, 1986.Rupali Bank Ltd. emerged as the largest Public Limited Banking Company of
the country on December 14, 1986.

In 2015, RBL contributed Tk. 17.04 (see Table 1) million to CSR activities. The highest amount
(35%) is being paid to liberation war sector. They also contributed 25% in disaster
management, 11% to education, 9% to sports, 6% to health, 3% to art and culture and 11% to
others social causes.

Although many initiative that are being every year by Rupali bank but compare to their annual profit,
the amount allocated for corporate social responsibility is quite small. Not even one percent of total
profit before tax is being spent by the bank. So they have to increase the volume of CSR as well as
budget for arranging different, more diversified CSR activities for the society. Following table shows
the proportion of total profit that has been spent by Rupali Bank.

ABOUT AGRANI BANK LIMITED..


ABL is a nationalized commercial bank (NCB) of Bangladesh established under the Bangladesh
Banks (Nationalization) Order 1972 by taking over two abandoned Pakistani banks Habib Bank and
Commerce Bank on 26 March 1972. The bank has been transformed into a Public Limited Company
with 100% possession of the government and started working from 15 November, 2007 as Agrani
Bank Limited (ABL) through taking over all assets, liabilities and business of Agrani Bank on the
source of Vendors Agreement sign up between the Government and the Agrani Bank. After
corporatization, the administration of the bank has been set autonomy to create the bank viable and
to run its commercial activities efficiently.

FINDINGS OF THE STUDY

The SoCBs has involvement in CSR activities.

Participation of the banks in different areas of CSR activities is limited.

The SoCBs contributes mainly in education, health & care disaster relief and arts and
culture.

The environment and sports get little concern of CSR.

Expansion of technology still does not provide good concern to all SoCBs.

The status of invention function is also not favorable.

RECOMMENDATION FOR THE STATE OWNED COMMERCIAL BANKS

Highest emphasis should be given to the education sector. Because, it is the backbone of a nation.

Special initiatives should be taken for women empowerment.

Bangladesh is doing well in sports in recent times. It needs to boost more through CSR activities.

Environment is a growing concern all over the world. So, it is needed to give special concern.

Expansion of technology needed provides good concern.

Invention function is also needed to provide favorable attention.
