Corrosion
Corrosion is the gradual
destruction of materials (usually
metals) by chemical reaction
with their environment.

Methods to prevent corrosion:Proper designing and selection of material

By using pure metal
Cathodic protection
By using metal alloys
By using corrosion inhibitors
By changing environment

Proper designing and selection of material

The material should not be selected only depending upon its cost
and structure but chemical properties and environment
conditions should be kept in mind.
It should be designed in such a way that cleaning of important
parts of the equipment can be done easily.
Sharp edges and corners should be avoided.
Two dissimilar metals in contact with each other should be close
to each other in electrochemical series.
The difference between relative areas of anodic and Cathodic
part should not be large. The anodic material among the two
dissimilar metals in contact must have large area.

By using pure metal

The corrosion occur at the faster rate if the metal
used is impure. There are lot of randomness and
disorder present in the arrangement of atoms in
case of impure metal making it unstable and not
able to resist the attack by corrosion material and
undergoes corrosion. If this, impure metal is
replaced by pure metal the corrosion will be resisted
because the pure metal is more stable as
compared to impure one.

The basic principle involved in cathodic protection is to make the

metal behaving like a cathode. No electrochemical reaction
resulting in corrosion will take place due to non-availability of
anode.

Cathodic
protection

Sacrificial anodic:
In this type of corrosion,
the metal to be protected
from corrosion is
connected with more
active metal. So, all
corrosion occurs on this
active metal and desired
material is protected
which acts as cathode.
The metals such as Zn,

Impressed current cathodic

Protection:
An immersed current opposite to the corrosion current is
applied. This convert the corroded metal into cathode
from anode.

By using metal alloys

Some noble metals found in the periodic table are very much
resistant to corrosion e.g. Pt, Au etc. There resistivity to
corrosion can further be increased by mixing them with other
metals i.e. by making the alloys. The alloys formed of these
metals should be homogeneous for maximum resistivity to
corrosion. Steel is made by alloying iron(Fe) with chromium
(Cr) for corrosion resistance.

By using corrosion
inhibitors:

A substance which reduces the corrosion of

metal by adding it in small quantities to the
corrosion site is called corrosion inhibitor.

By changing environment
By changing the environment means that changing
the reaction conditions which leads to corrosion.
These includes removal of oxygen, neutralizing the
acidic conditions , reduction in moisture content,
making the reaction product inactive.
