INTRODUCTION
The environmental impact of concrete is complex.
Some are harmful, others welcome.
Hence there is a need to modify the concrete in
accordance with the environmental sustainability.
Concrete modification is increasing in response to
improved environmental awareness, legislation, and
economic considerations.
All these leads to the necessity of an Environmentalfriendly concrete, which is commonly known to us as
the Green Concrete.

GREEN CONCRETE
The concrete in which a waste material or a residual
product in manufacturing process is used as a
substituent for cement, fine and coarse aggregate.
Technique - REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE.
Environmental friendly concrete that uses less energy
in its production.
Concrete with sustainable development without
destruction of natural resources.

MATERIALS FOR GREEN CONCRETE

The materials used should be renewable one.
The materials should be regionally available.
Salvaged and refurnished materials can be used.
The materials should be reusable and recyclable.
By-products of various production industries such as
blast furnace slag, manufactured sand (m-sand ) and
fly ash can be used.

REPLACEMENT OF ALITE:

Alite, a chemical component is responsible for the

quick setting of concrete and initial strength.
It requires high temperature during roasting in
cement manufacturing process (about 1500 C)
which increases CO2 emission.
It could be replaced with Belite, a similar mineral
but with increased setting time which can also be
shortened by the addition of Magnesium salts.
It requires less temperature for roasting (about 1200
C) which can contribute to CO 2 reduction.

REPLACEMENT OF COARSE AGGREGATE:

Replacement of coarse aggregates can reduce
quarrying thus reducing Air Pollution and unwanted
landfills.

REPLACEMENT OF FINE AGGREGATES:

Replacing fine aggregate can eliminate
disproportionate swelling in concrete thus avoiding
cracking.
Replacing conventional river sand can avoid overexploitation of land covers near rivers.

ADDITION OF CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS:

Fly ash can be used as part replacement of Cement in
Concrete. Finer the fly ash, better is its reactivity and
lesser is its water requirement.
Utilization of fly ash as a mineral admixture in
concrete saves on cement and hence the emission of
carbon dioxide.
Addition of fly ash can
Optimize use of materials
Reduce shrinkage
Reduce carbon dioxide footprint

GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE:
It is a mineral polymer resulting from geochemistry.
The Geo polymerisation process comprises of a
chemical reaction under highly alkaline
conditions.

MECHANISM

13

Cont..,
Geopolymer is used as the binder, instead of Cement
paste, to produce concrete.
The Geopolymer paste binds the coarse and fine
aggregates and other un-reacted materials together to
form Geopolymer Concrete.
In this process it does not produce CO2 like in
production of Portland cement.

14

ADVANTAGES
Reduce extra loads in landfills.
Triggers re-use of materials.
Reduction in transport costs.
Reduces cement usage hence reduced carbon dioxide
emission.
Low production costs.
Saves Energy.
Better workability.
Sustainable development.

15

CONCLUSION
Development is needed but Sustainable Development
is mandatory which is brought about by the Green
Concrete.
Reducing the Carbon dioxide in the environment is on
the peak of necessity currently that can also be
contributed by the production of Green Concrete.
God created the Earth. Man created the rest. It is
necessary to save what God created during our creation.
