Key of writing
a successful
personal
reflection

The reflection process begins with a

defining and sharing of the "What" of
the student's experience, and follows a
continuous cycle towards "So What?"
and
"Now
What?
What
? So
what ? now what?
What
Report the facts and events of an
experience, objectively.
So what
Analyze the experience.
Now what
Consider the future impact of
the
experience on you and the
community.

Examples of Reflection
Questions based on the
Experiential Learning Cycle

What?

What happened?
What did you observe?
What issue is being addressed or
population is being served?

So What?
Did you learn a new skill or clarify an interest?
Did you feel anything that surprised you?
How is your experience different from what you
expected?
What impacts the way you view the
situation/experience? (What lens are you viewing
from?)
What did you like/dislike about the experience?
What did you learn about the people/community?
What are some of the pressing needs/issues in
the community?
How does this project address those needs?

Now What?
What seem to be the root causes of the issue
addressed?
What other work is currently happening to address the
issue?
What learning occurred for you in this experience?
How can you apply this learning?
What would you like to learn more about, related to this
project or issue?
What follow-up is needed to address any challenges or
difficulties?
What information can you share with your peers or the
community?
If you could do the project again, what would you do
differently?

The Four Cs of
Reflection
Effective strategies for
fostering reflection are based
on four core elements of
reflection known asthe Four
Cs.* These elements are
described below:

Continuous reflection:

Challenging reflection:

Examples of
Reflection

Write a reflection of about 300 words

to assess your own language progress
throughout the course.
WAJ 3103: English Language Proficiency II is builds
on parts of speech or word classes, listening and
speaking skills, reading skills, writing for different
types, writing academic papers and writing
reflections.
I used to believe that learning English is hard;
however, after I went through the course WAJ
3103, my perception has shifted. Through the
course, my listening skills have been improved.
When I had listening test, I am able to listen
critically to a recording and answer by fill in the
blanks and multiple-choice question.

Other than that, the course was able to improve my

English grammar when I have to answer grammar
exercise on conjunctions, preposition and
interjections given by the lecturer. I have been able
to read for meaning and understanding of a variety
of texts and give personal response during the
course. This is because I have been doing practices
and read English texts whenever I am free. I always
put my Oxford dictionary by my side so I can easily
check upon a word I dont know during reading
time.
After my grammar has been improved, I am able to
write well in different types of writing and academic
papers. I feel that my writing still got a lot of room
for improvement so I should continue to work hard
on my practice for a better writing.

Furthermore, the course was able to improve my

English speaking skills. I have listened to my
lecturer advice and speak the language whenever I
can.I have spoken it with friends and family. Other
than that, I will also observe the mouth movements
of those who speak English well and try to imitate
them. My lecturer is one good example for me to
learn from.
This course has greatly improved my English
language and I hope that I can use all of what Ive
learned to be a better teacher in the future.
