INTRODUCTION
This paper investigates the enhancement of voltage stability using
static synchronous series compensator(SSSC)
Voltage stability
voltage stability is concerned with the ability of a power system
to maintain acceptable voltages at all buses in the system under
normal conditions and after being subjected to a disturbance

a system enters in a state of instability when a

disturbance i.e
increase in load demand or
change in system conditions causes a progressive and
uncontrollable decline in voltage ,the main factor
causing instability is the inability of the power system
to meet the demand of reactive power

BASIC OPERATION PRINCIPLE OF

SSSC
Here the phase displacement of the
inserted voltage Vpq, with respect to
the transmission
line current line I , determines the
exchange of real and reactive power
with the ac system.

SSSC operation in four quadrants

The line current phasor lline is used as a reference
phasor while the injected SSSC voltage phasor (Vpq)
is allowed to rotate around the center of the circle

Fig. shows a single line diagram of a simple transmission line

with an inductive reactance, XL connecting a sending-end voltage
Source Vs and a receiving-end voltage source Vr

The real and reactive power (P and Q) flow at the receiving-end

voltage source are given by the expressions
A SSSC, limited by its voltage and current
ratings, is capable of introducing a
compensating reactance, Xq in series
with the transmission line inductive
reactance XL

Classification of voltage stability

1.Small disturbance voltage stability
This is concerned with a system ability to
control voltages following small disturbances ,
such as gradual changes in load
2.Large disturbance voltage stability
it is concerned with a systems ability to control
voltages following large disturbances such as
faults ,loss of load , or loss of generation these large
disturbance stability can be studied by using
nonlinear time domain simulation which includes
proper modelling

TWO MACHINE POWER SYSTEM MODELLING

OBTAINED RESULT FROM THE SIMULATIONS

Simulation result
Bus-2 parameters without SSSC
Changes in active and reactive powers of bus-2 have been obtained in
real time

According to the Figure at first, due to the large loads of the system active
power of bus-2 got oscillations which keep continuing for 3 seconds.
However, the controlling systems in power plants 1 and 2 such as
governor, PSS and other stabilizing devices are used for damping these9

reactive power of bus-2 also got oscillations at first

and then will be damped properly.

Simulation results with installation of

sssc between bus 1 and 2
SSSC has been placed between bus-1 and bus-2
and the aim is achieving the following active and
reactive powers:

Pref=4p.u

Qref=-1p.u

Conclusion

It has been found that the SSSC is capable of controlling the flow
of power at a desired point on the transmission line.

It is also observed that the SSSC injects a fast changing voltage

in series with
the line
Based on obtained simulation results the performance of the
SSSC has been examined in a multimachine system, and
applications of the SSSC will be
extended in future to a complex system
