Warehouse Hierarchy

Warehouse:
Organizational divisioning, usually of a plant that is used
for the purpose of managing materials or goods that are
stored in storage bins.
Storage Type:
A physical or logical storage area that can be defined for a
warehouse in the WM system. Warehouse is further divided
into Storage types based on Spatial, Technical and/or
Organizational Characteristics e.g.:- Bulk Storage ,Open
Storage, High Rack Storage, Picking Area, Shelf Storage.
There are some storage types shared by WM and IM for
operational purposes called as Interim Storage Areas. They
are :-Goods Receipt Area , Goods Issue Area , Interim
Storage Area for differences and Posting Change Zone

Warehouse Hierarchy
Storage Section / Picking Area:
A logical or physical subdivision of the storage type that
groups together Storage Bins. The sectioning id done
based on criteria Fast moving items, Slow moving items,
Casting /forging commodities, Proprietary items etc
Storage Bin:
The smallest addressable unit of space in a warehouse
(often referred to as a storage slot). Since the address
of a storage bin is frequently derived from a coordinate
system, a storage bin is often referred to as a coordinate.
Quant:
The existence of a material or a batch (same lot number)
of a material in a storage bin. The material quantity in a
quant can be increased by an addition to existing stock

Warehouse Hierarchy
Interim Storage Bins Interim Storage Bins are
assigned to the Interim Storage Types /areas.
Interim Storage bins can have 3 types of Coordinates
Pre defined Normal ascending order co-ordinates
Dynamic Generated dynamically during GR e.g.:
GR number as the bin number. This is configured
during the definition of movement type in WM
Fixed The Storage bin is fixed for the Material and
maintained in the Material Master WM view. This
will need to extend the material to Storage Type
level.

Transfer Requirement Information

Transfer Requirement (TR) is created in order to plan a stock
movement.
The TR indicates a need to move a specific quantity (quant) of a
material into the warehouse (stock placement) or to move a quantity
out of the warehouse (stock removal). Depending on the type of
movement, TR are normally created automatically as a result of a
transaction in another SAP component.
The TR provides information about anticipated stock movements.
The TR is later converted into one or several Transfer Orders (TO).
A transfer requirement (TR) contains the following information:
What is to be moved (material number)?
How much is to be moved (quantity)?
How is it palletized (material master)?
What is the reason/origin (movement type / purchase order)?
What has already been moved (if partial)?

28

Transfer Order Information

Transfer order

The transfer order is an instruction to move materials from a source storage bin to
a destination storage bin within the warehouse complex.
Transfer orders contain the following information:
Material number
Quantity to be moved
Source, destination and return storage bins
The information that the transfer order needs comes from several sources:
Material master record
Warehouse management movement type
Strategies for finding the source or destination storage bins
User entries
Source documents, such as transfer requirements and deliveries
You can also create TO manually, for example, to move stock from one storage
bin to another within the warehouse.
The Destination Bin can be changed during confirmation of TO.

Posting Change Notice(PCN)

Posting change
A posting change refers to a change in information about a
particular material. A posting change usually changes (at
least) one quant characteristic (matl. No., batch,
stk.category, sp.stk indicator, plant, or storage location) .
For e.g. when releasing stock from inspection.
For most posting changes, the goods themselves remain in
the same location and no physical stock transfer takes
place.
Reasons for making Posting Changes

Releasing stocks from Inspection to Available

Converting Block stock to Inspection
Designating Available material as Inspection
Changing the material number
Splitting available material in batches
Converting special stocks into own stocks
Changing ownership of stock in same WM from one plant to another.
