INTRODUCTION
Conservation

of energy is of the utmost importance because this field

involves betterment of the human lives and environment.

One

of the major problems in the most populated and developing

countries like India, is Power crisis.

India

is the worlds fourth largest power consumer. Its energy needs

continue to increase, but national energy shortages and an inadequate
energy infrastructure could lead to national energy poverty.

Therefore,

The energy saving system for classroom using Image

Processing can prove to be a positive change so as to avoid the wastage
of power.

What

other ways are already adopted to avoid wastage of power.

Benefit

of using Image Processing in this Project.

IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUE

Image processing is a method to convert an image into digital form and perform
some operations on it, in order to get an enhanced image or to extract some useful
information from it.

Now using this technique we monitor the changes in the class through sequence of
images and according to that the power supply is controlled.

IMAGE ACQUISITION

Image acquisition means creating digital images from a physical scene.

REFRENCE IMAGE

REAL TIME IMAGE

RGB to Gray conversion is done for both the reference and captured images.
The purpose of this image intensity conversion is the analysis of the image which is
easy for processing in gray scale mode than in the RGB mode.

GRAYSCALE REFRENCE IMAGE

GRAYSCALE REAL TIME IMAGE

IMAGE PARTITIONING
The reference image and real time image is divided into zones.

IMAGE PARTITIONING ILLUSTRATION

Now in our case, classroom is installed with many fans and lights. Each fan or a light
has its own coverage area. According to the coverage area we split the image into
many zones, with each zones is simply the area covered by a fan.

IMAGE MSE AND COMPARISION

The real time images are subtracted from the reference image.
MSE of every zone is calculated.

MSE

VALUES

MSE1

0.8526

MSE2

1.9820

MSE3

2.0132

To make the comparison of the images, a threshold value is selected. In our example,
this threshold value is 1.9500

ARDUINO(UNO)

The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller

board based on the ATmega328.
It has 14 digital input/output pins (of
which 6 can be used as PWM outputs),
6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz crystal
oscillator, a USB connection, a power
jack, an In-Circuit Serial Programming
header, and a reset button.

TRANSFORMER

A Transformer is an electrical device

that takes electricity of one voltage and
changes it into another voltage.
Basically, a Transformer changes
electricity from high to low voltage or
low to high voltage

DC MOTOR
Dc motor is a device that converts DC
electrical energy to a mechanical
energy.
It is based on the principle that when a
current-carrying conductor is placed in
a magnetic field, it experiences a
mechanical force.
The direction of rotation of a this
motor is given by Flemings left hand
rule.

L293D

L293D is a 16 IC designed to drive

inductive loads such as relays,
solenoids, dc and bipolar stepping
motors, as well as other highcurrent/high-voltage loads in positivesupply applications.

RELAY
Relays are devices used to make or
break connections in an electric circuit.
When a relay switch opens or closes
depends on the conditions of the
circuit.
Relays react to variations in current,
and will open or close a switch when
the current reaches a certain voltage.

SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION
Arduino programs can be written in
any programming language with a
compiler that produces binary machine
code.
The Arduino projects provide the
Arduino integrated development
environment (IDE), which is a crossplatform application written in Java.

CONCLUSION
This

project presents the design and the implementation of

Energy Saving Classroom Using Image Processing.
This system does not need human intervention and is of low
cost.
The system showed that image processing is a better technique
to control the power supply in the classrooms.
In addition, it shows that it can reduce the wastage of
electricity and avoids the free running of those electrical
equipments.
It is also more consistent in detecting presence of people
because it uses real time images.

FUTURE SCOPE
In

future this system can be made further efficient if face detection

technique is added up to it .This system can be used for marking
attendance in the classrooms by the use of face detection.

Thus

it can serve two purposes with same system. This project can find
application in the field of Power saving, for example in classrooms,
halls, auditorium, theaters ,home automation, offices etc.
