Free Smarter Planet City sim game

Gamers explore cross-system impacts of REAL problems and REAL solutions
Industries: Banking, Energy, Retail, Water.
Example mission: Your citys water usage has increased at twice the rate of population growth,
supplies are becoming tested (and possibly polluted by human activity); your municipality is losing as
much as 40% of its water supply through leaky infrastructure; and your energy costs are steadily
increasing. The player must institute a Water Management System so you have accurate real time
data to make decisions on delivering the highest water quality in most economical way.

to
foster
collaboration between researchers at leading
universities and those in IBM research,

awards are selected based on the global
competitiveness and intended openness of the
project. In addition, the program aims at
promoting open courseware and curriculum
innovation to stimulate growth in disciplines and
geographies that are strategic to IBM.
Although the Faculty Awards are not in the form
of contracts, we strongly encourage all work to
be placed in the public domain, and expect that
is the intention of the faculty as well. Though
IBM has no right to intellectual property from
work completed with award funding, strong
collaborations typically result in skills/knowledge
transfer, hiring, and future collaborations

Partnerships/Collaborations (from doing it on both sides

Industry Government/Academia)
Each partner should be just as committed to the other partners objectives and benefits as they are to their own.
(Work harder to make your partner successful than you do for yourself.)
One (i.e., management) cannot make two people collaborate if they do not want to.
Only ask for or take a resource/investment from the other partner if it is absolutely essential for the success a
project/program (i.e., throwing things at the wall to see what sticks is a waste of resource and time).
Work just as hard to find ways for your partner to benefit as you do for yourself.
Be innovative, take risks, try new approaches but terminate projects quickly and fairly that are not working.
Dont let them die a slow death
Establish, manage, and measure the success of the partnership at the institutional level, not by individual
people or projects.
IBM is a business, Qatar University is an academic institution. Understand that difference, accept it, and use it
effectively to benefit the partnership.
Dont build a cumbersome bureaucracy or management structure/process. Youll spend all of your time on
management instead of the actual innovative programs.
Give the faculty and researchers running and participating in the programs sufficient independence. Let them
make it successful for themselves and it will be successful for you. Flexibility and the ability to change
directions/re-scope when needed is important. (Herding cats is frustrating to both the cats and the herder.)
Trusting your partner and being trustworthy yourself is way more important than what is written in the
partnership agreement. (The best partnerships have agreements that go into a file cabinet and never need to
be taken out.
Listen to and respect your partners opinions/positions, even when you know they are wrong. Then find a way
together to make them right.
The Golden Rule always applies.

I B M U N I V E R S I T Y D AY

Possible steps to build a Qatar

University-IBM Partnership
Establish a joint vision and mission for the partnership.
Identify the key objectives required to achieve the vision and mission.
Identify program areas of mutual priority and impact to QU and IBM, describing specific
projects in each program area where possible.
Define the business model for the partnership, recognizing the key stages of startup, growth,
and sustained operations, along with funding and resource levels.
Identify any other institutions that could engage in each program and their level, type, and
timing of participation. I.e., start small and build larger with success. Dont try to do everything
with everyone all at once.
What are the most critical resources and investments required from QU and IBM for the
partnership and each of the programs.
Define the roles and responsibilities in each program for QU, IBM, and any other participating
institutions.
Establish the metrics which QU and IBM will use to measure the progress and success for
each program and of the overall partnership.
Define the details for IP, licensing, press/publications, (joint) proposals, etc.
Establish a roadmap for the partnership and each of the programs.
Define the governance and management structure/processes.
Develop and execute a QU-IBM partnership agreement.
Develop the program plans (scope, schedule, and budget) for each program.
Initiate and execute the partnership program plans.

Real results IBM: Wichita State University uses advanced analytics to
predict potential students chances of success
By enabling marketing
teams to focus on high
quality applicants, the
universities experienced

I B M U N I V E R S I T Y D AY

15% boost in
registrations

Business problem: The university must keep enrollment levels high,

generating enough tuition revenue to cover the costs of high-quality courses
and faculty. Simply attracting large numbers of applicants, however, fails as a
strategy if the university subsequently has a high dropout or failure rate.
Dropped and failed courses lead to lower revenues, undersubscribed courses
and poor academic outcomes
Solution: The university created a centralized information service with
analysts equipped with SPSS tools for advanced analytics
The predictive analytics solution from IBM allows us to build expertise within
the university so that we can learn what works and improve our marketing
efficiency. At the admissions level, it gives us a better understanding of
whats important, helping us to control our costs and predict likely outcomes.
For the business analysts, it provides a unified view of our data, and they can
generate reports on almost any variable in near-real time.
-- Dr David Wright, assistant vice president for strategic planning and
business intelligence

building effective intervention strategies.

Business problem: American Public University System (APUS) is an

online university serving 70,000 distance learners from the U.S. and
more than 100 countries. The university wanted to boost student
retention and academic excellence by identifying the factors driving
student behavior and predicting the likelihood of an individual student
staying on course or dropping out.
Solution: IBMs predictive analytics identifies the variables crucial to
student retention and provided administrators with online dashboards
to identify at-risk students and build intervention strategies, including
better course designs, to keep students on track to graduation.
By leveraging the power of predictive analytics, we can predict the
probability that any given student will drop out.

Business problem: The university wanted to extend the Seton Hall experience
to prospective students and to reach students at the place where they already

visibility into social media channels
People running academic programs are busy. They dont want to know about
jargon like bounce rates. What they do focus on is the risk of failure [to make the
numbers]. Our message is how to help them avoid that.

academics and research programs.
Solution: Implement a Multi-purpose cloud environment to supports its
Enterprise Computing Research Laboratory in addition to several critical
business and education-related functions such as admissions, registration,
accounting and enterprise resource planning (ERP), as well as websites,

Solution: Implement an Enterprise Risk Management Information System
(ERMIS) across their 10 campuses and 5 medical centers, integrating separate
data sources to provide near real time information to all levels of the university.
ERMIS significantly improves the University systems ability to identify and

monitors. Use advanced analytics to monitor energy consumption and asset
performance, identify anomalies, and raise alerts and notifications (as work
orders) to resolve building maintenance issues.
The work with IBM, and Johnson Controls, will help us advance the vision of

guiding our evolution and setting the stage for progress for years to come,"
