Introduction-ME 346
Books: No specific books. Several
excellent books available in the
library. Instruction material largely
comes from:
Textbook of Heat Transfer:
Sukhatme
Fundamentals of Heat and Mass
Transfer: Incropera and Dewitt
Tutorial problems largely come from
second text book above

Tutorials: Typically once a week.

Questions will be uploaded on
moodle and then solved in class. At
the end a question will be given for
solving which will have to be
submitted and will be graded.
Tutorials will be graded by TAs. Will
account for 5% of grade.
Used paper will be supplied for you
to work on, to the extent possible.

Attendance is a measure of discipline and

not academic competence. However,
attendance will be taken and sent to your
postal address with your marks in midsem
and endsem. It is between you and your
guardian to figure out what to do with this
information.
No DX grade awarded for poor attendance.
Final records of instructor sent to all by email. Your responsibility to ensure that
errors are pointed out within one or two
days time.

Introduction-ME 346
Objectives:
Understand the physics of the
problem and be able to formulate and
solve simple problems in heat transfer
Conceptualize real problems. Solve a
simplified version of the problem,
relate to known problems and get a
feel for the solution and then look at
the real problem

General Introduction-1
Transfer of energy from more
energetic particles to less energetic
particles. Does not require any bulk
motion of molecules.
In gases and liquids: conduction is
due to the collisions and diffusion of
molecules during their random
motion.
In solid: energy transfer due to the
combination of vibration of the

General Introduction-2
Rate equation to compute amount of heat
energy transferred per unit time.

Transfer of energy due to bulk
motion of the fluid in addition to the
random molecular motion.
