DEPARTURE LOUNGE
The departure lounge is an area in which passengers

may sit and wait, having passed through passport

control, until their plane is ready for boarding.

GATES AND BRIDGES

walkwayorpassenger boarding bridge) is an enclosed, movable connector which
extends from anairport terminal gate to anairplane, allowing passengers to board and
disembark without having to go outside.

BAGGAGE CHECK-IN
At the time of check-in, the passenger hands over baggage which is checked by

the airport security and sealed. Anything that is above the weight limit or which is
not allowed to be carried by the passenger himself to the aircraft cabin is usually
handed over to the agent at the time of check-in. The baggage allowance is
prescribed by the airline and anything in excess will warrant additional surcharges.

BAGGAGE CAROUSEL
Abaggage carouselis a device, generally at anairport, that delivers checked

luggage to the passengers at thebaggage claimarea at their final destination.

Not all airports use these devices. Airports that do not have carousels generally
deliver baggage by placing it on the floor or sliding it through an opening in a
wall.

Shops and Food Services

The prices charged for food are generally higher than prices found outside the airport. However, some

airports now regulate food costs to keep them comparable to "street prices". This term is misleading as
prices often match the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) but are almost never discounted.

Some airport restaurants offer regional cuisine specialties for those in transit so that they may sample

local food or culture without leaving the airport

Premium and VIP

Services

Airports may also contain premium and VIP services. The premium

and VIP services may include express check-in, dedicated check-in

counters, separate departures and/or arrivals lounge, priority
boarding, separate air bridges, and priority baggage handling.

Cargo and Freight

Services

In addition to people, airports move cargo

around the clock. Cargo airlines often have

their own on-site and adjacent infrastructure
to transfer parcels between ground and air.

INTERNAL TRANSPORT

The distances passengers need to move within a large

airport can be substantial. It is common for airports to

providemoving walkways and buses. TheHartsfieldJackson
Atlanta International Airport has a tram that takes people
through the concourses and baggage claim.
