Differences between internet, intranet and World

Wide Web
Internet = The Internet- a global system of interconnected
computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol
suite (TCP/IP)
Intranet = a private network within an organisation which
may offer printer sharing, file sharing, communication,
private websites etc...which uses internet technologies such
as TCP/IP and web browsers
WWW = World Wide Web- a system of interlinked
hypertext documents accessed via the Internet

What is it?

Cloud Computing

The Average Cloud user

Connects to the cloud via the Internet
Does computing tasks
Runs applications
Stores Data

Do you Use the Cloud?

Type of service
Software as a Service (SaaS)

is a software
distribution model in which applications are hosted
by a vendor or service provider and made
available to customers over a network, typically
the Internet.

The Cloud Requires

An Internet connection
An account - Created with a user name and a password
Agree to Terms

So what is the cloud?

=
Computing and software resources that are delivered on
demand, as service.
(2013, January) A Walk in the Clouds. Cloud Computing, CDW-G Reference Guide., 3-5.

Computer Storage
Computers have internal or hard drive storage(C: Drive)
CPU has a drive for storing programs, documents, pictures,
videos, presentations, etc

Standard Computer
Tower or Central
Processing Unit
(CPU)

Inside the Computer

Internal Storage
Content is stored on THAT computer
To use content must return to THAT computer
Cannot access this content from another device or
computer

External Storage
Allows your content to become mobile
Save to the storage device
Take device to any compatible computer
Open and use content
CD/DVD

Thumb Drive

SD Card

External Hard Drive

Micro SD
Card

Benefits
Saving Large Files
Multiple file types Photos, videos, presentations, docs
Back-up of stored files
File Sharing
Access from devices
Nothing to forget (thumb drive, cd)
Project collaboration

File Sharing / The cloud

Advantages
Can be less expensive compared to buying software
and hardware
Can be used from any computer or device with an
Internet connection
The device does not need as large of an internal
storage system
Updates occur across the service

Disadvantages

FTP: TheFile Transfer Protocol(FTP) is a standard
network protocol used to transfer computer files from

Internet.FTPis built on a client-server architecture and
uses separate control and data connections between

What is Web 2.0?

The original World-Wide Web ('The

collection of mostly static websites
that published information.
'Web 2.0 is the name given to the
recent development of interactive
websites that are quite different to
the old, static websites.

Many websites on the Web

today allow users to:

share information (e.g. notes and

photos on Facebook)
interact (add comments, chat,
etc.)
collaborate on content (e.g.
creating pages on Wikipedia)
create their own content (e.g.
videos on YouTube)

Web 2.0 is often called the 'Social Web

It's also been called the 'Read-Write Web'

1- Blogs / web logs

A blog is a website where someone (usually a
normal person - not a professional writer) writes

The pages of a wiki can be edited by anyone (or
those who have the password)
So that different people can add to the page, edit
things or fix errors
Used for Encyclopaedia and Help Sites

3- Media Uploading Sites

and share their own media such as photos,
music or video.
Usually other users can rate or leave their
comment .

who are friends / relatives, or who share
similar interests.
Connected users can then share information
/ pictures / files with each other, send
messages, chat, etc.

Advantages of info. On the Internet:

reliable sites to see if it is
reliable

There are a huge number of

websites that contain highly
offensive, or illegal material.
To avoid this type of material, you
can make use of parental
control or web page filtering
software.

If filtering software is not

installed on a computer:
Use the 'safe search' feature on search
