Why doing FY project/research?

To obtain new knowledge, explore unknown
aspects and find out solutions for current/new
problems.
Research leads to invention, innovation and
creation of products which are useful to
make the living happier.
The outcome of the project/research shall be
disseminated Thesis
GETTING THE DEGREE

W.Kuntjoro, FYP Thesis Writing, 09/04/14

The final year projects is made compulsory

..
The student is shown to have developed
techniques in literature review and information
prospecting. It provides opportunities to utilise
appropriate modern technology in some
aspect of the work, emphasising the need for
engineers to make use of computers and
multimedia technology in everydaypractice.

Why doing FY project/research?

PO1

Engineering knowledge - Able to apply knowledge of mathematics, science,

engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution
of complex engineering problem.

PO3

Design/ Development of solutions - Able to design solutions for complex

engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that
meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and
safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

PO4

Investigation Able to conduct investigation into complex problems using

research-based knowledge and research methods including design of
experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of
information to provide valid conclusions.

PO5

Modern tool usage Able to create, select and apply appropriate

techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including
prediction and modeling, to complex engineering activities, with an
understanding of the limitations.

PO6

The engineer and society Able to apply reasoning informed by contextual

knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and
the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering
practice.

PO9

Communication Able to communicate effectively on complex engineering

activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as
being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design
documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear
instructions.

Literature Review
State of the art in the domain
What other researchers have done
Research trends within the domain
What has not been done
What can be improved
From:Text books, proceedings, journals (Ideally
the international journals of the last two years)
A good (please see above) literature review can
indicate the originality - importance of the approach
conducted in the research !!!

PROBLEM STATEMENT (Problem Definition)

is a clear, precise statement of the question or issue
that is to be investigated with the goal of finding an
answer or solution

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Should indicate the nature of the research project
Must indicate exactly what you are seeking from the
research

Literature Review
(Additional Notes)

W.Kuntjoro, FYP Thesis Writing, 09/04/14

Literature Review
Some thought for considerations

What is known about the subject?

What is the current status of research in this area?
Are there any gaps in the knowledge of the subject?
Have areas of further study been identified by other
researchers that you may want to consider?
What aspects have generated significant debate on the
topic?

Literature Review
Some thought for considerations
What methods or problems were identified by others
studying in the field and how might they impact your
research?
What is the most productive methodology for your
research based on the literature you have reviewed?
What sources of information or data were identified
that might be useful to you?

W.Kuntjoro, FYP Thesis Writing, 09/04/14

Purpose of Literature Review

To see what has and has not been investigated.
To discover how a research project is related to the
work of others.
To identify data sources that other researches have
used.
To learn how others have defined and measured key
concepts.
It allows the reader to be brought up to date regarding
the state of research in the field
to convey to the reader what knowledge and ideas
have been established on a topic and what are the
strengths and weaknesses.
