About the Circulatory

System
Also called the cardiovascular system
Made up of blood vessels, veins, arteries, capillaries, and the
heart that pumps blood throughout the human body
Capillaries are small blood vessels
An artery is a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to
any other part in the human body
A vein is a vessel or tube that carries blood throughout the body
Blood vessels are tubes that circulate blood
The heart is an organ that pumps blood
Supplies cells in a human body with food, and oxygen
It takes away the carbon dioxide
Regulates a humans body activities with hormones, which are
chemical substances

Parts of the Circulatory System

Has three main parts, the heart, blood
vessels, and blood.

About the Heart

Heart is a muscular organ that pumps
blood
Has two pumps that are side by side
Left side is stronger than the right
Left side receives blood from the lungs
to send throughout the body
Right side receives blood from the cells
in the body and sends it to the lungs

About the Blood Vessels

Connecting tubes in the body
Three kinds of blood vessels,
arteries, veins, and capillaries
Arteries carry blood from the heart
Veins return blood to the heart
Capillaries are small vessels that
connect arteries and the veins.

About the Blood

Mostly made up of plasma

Made mostly of water
Also contains proteins, minerals and other things
Blood also made up of formed elements
These formed elements are red blood cells, white
blood cells and platelets.
Red blood cells carry oxygen and carbon dioxide
throughout the body
White blood cells help protect the body from disease
Platelets release substances that enable blood to
collect

Functions of the Circulatory System

Helps with respiration
Delivers oxygen to the cells
Nutrition
Supplies cells in the body with digested food substances
Removal of wastes and poisons
helps dispose of waste products and poisons that would harm
the body if they collect. These substances include carbon
dioxide, salts, and ammonia, which is a by-product of the cell's
use of protein.
Other functions
Protects body from disease
White blood cells destroy bacteria and viruses
As the blood circulates it regulates our body temperature

Illnesses in the Circulatory System

Can damaged by disease or injury.
The common disease of the system is arteriosclerosis,
which results from the accumulation of fatty deposits in
the arteries.
thicken the walls of the arteries
flow of blood is restricted
blood clots develop in the affected vessels
lead to a heart attack or a stroke, a condition in which
the brain does not receive enough blood.
hypertension, commonly called high blood pressure
may lead to such complications as a heart attack, a
stroke, or kidney failure.
