Question 1.
Both have an eye catching title, and a name that will be memorable to
most readers.
Mixmag is packed with more information on the front cover and is less
simple looking compared to M.A.D.
Dance magazines normally have urban brands and clothes which is worn
by celebrities for endorsement, M.A.D matches its rivals as it is shown.(
adiddas )
They both have Dj¶s or music artists on the front which catches the eye
of the reader, particularly if the reader is fond of that certain music artist.
M.A.D has a catchy sell line which is µMad About Dance¶ where as
mixmag basically has a description of how well known it is by the public
by saying its µThe worlds biggest music and clubbing magazine¶.
Mixmag has a free giveaway on the front which in this case is a cd rom,
M.A.D does not have any free giveaways.
M.A.D shows its main background on the front cover in the µclub scene¶
which gives it an urban look and will attract people that go to clubs and
the younger age end of the market.
Both of the µmain¶ music artists/Dj¶s on both of the front covers have
serious looks on there faces, which makes my product more believable.
Different types of text over the front cover which relates to different
stories inside the magazine, this particular issue of mixmag influenced
me to do this.
Question 2.

The model on my front cover is holding stereo

headphones which connotes that people who listen to
dance music will also use headphones like this so this
magazine front cover connects with the audience.
On contents and double page spread there are
different types of people as I have tried to mix it up
slightly with an µindie¶ look, and a µblack hip hop¶
music artist interview which will appeal to different
groups of people to make them feel comfortable with
reading the magazine.
The fact that I have used a µwhite male¶ model,
stereotypes the white working class µhoody¶ youth
culture. E.g.-skinhead, addidas tracksuit, urban look.
This front cover represents youth culture as the main
background is set in the club scene which is an
idealisation of young people.
The text which I have used for this front cover
particular µMusic is my Saviour¶ text is in a graffiti
style which is a youth sub-culture for the urban scene
of graffiti and vandalism which portrays youngsters in
a bad light.
Question 3.
µMixmag¶ is the one music magazine which relates to
my product more then any other dance magazine
because µmixmag¶ influenced me more to obtain the
product which I have ended up with.

Development hell http://developmenthell.co.uk

This company are likely to publish my magazine
because they currently publish µmixmag¶ which I
mentioned earlier is a very similar product to mine,
which gives my product a good case to be distributed
by them, and µthe word¶.

My product is more likely to fit into a small µniche¶

category more then a massive mainstream category
due to the iconography and style audience my product
is aimed at.
Question 4.
The audience for my product will be mainly aimed at a niche audience of
age 16-25 boys who are interested in hardcore dance and baseline music
genre. This is because my product is packed with music artists which fit
into that sub-culture music genre which the audience who would buy my
product are fond of.
I would not expect this product to attract many girls as it was not originally
aimed at them, but there may again be a small niche audience that this
product appeals to females. But I would not expect this product to appeal
to women that much, only those who are interested in that genre of music.
There isn't very much gossip in my magazine, as it is more aimed at
reviewing albums, interviewing music artists in my product music genre,
and looking into artists background as well. E.g.- facts and figures, which
shows why females may not be as interested as µNME¶ or µKerrang¶ as they
do have gossip pages unlike my product which is aimed more for a niche
audience then a mainstream one.
I would not expect my product to attract the attention of any gender over
the age of 30 as there would only be a small group that may like it, but
probably would not purchase the product, as there not in the same time
period as younger people nowadays as they would have been born in the
80¶s and grew up listening to music and the µoriginal raver¶s¶ in the
90¶s,dance music has completely taken an opposite direction from what it
was, so at the present time it may not appeal to them.
Question 5.
I attracted my audience by adding interviews by
there favourite artists of that genre so that it
appeals to the sub genre of my audience. E.g.-
µBass star¶ interview, and the µtop 10 Dj¶s of the
year¶ which appeals to the audience which would
buy my product.
The fact that there currently isn't many magazines
out there with this particular sub genre of music
like mine other then µMixmag¶ which still only
covers mainstream dance music and not niche
categories like mine, will attract the audience it is
aimed at. E.G.- Baseline, Dub step, Grime.
Competitions in my magazine and the stories
which relate to the readers favourite music artists
such as µDJ Lund-music is my saviour¶, the
realness of the story and getting to know where
they came from are inspiring to the audience.
Which in turn will make it all more attractive for the
audience to buy and not something completely
cheesy.
Question 6.
I have learnt quite a bit about technologies through
developing my product.

Technologies I have used through doing this

include:

Facebook-for feedback on what my product

looks like and to choose appropriate style
for aspects of my magazine.

Video camera in my preliminary task and

uploaded it to YouTube for my blog.

Camera to take pictures of my models on

front covers of my main product and my
preliminary task.

How to use Photoshop and Quark

effectively such as cropping photos,
text boxes, fiddling with titles and
colours, this helped me to develop
my product from start to the finished
product now.
Question 7.
I have leant how to use Photoshop better- E.G.- Use of font
effects and pictures such as drop shadow effects etc. which I
didn¶t know how to use properly when I was doing my
preliminary task.

Quark express is the same case except my ability to use it

before was extremely limited to how I use it now, I can use
it more freely and confidently to create a better finished
product at the end.

I have learnt about the magazine market audience

trends, what I mean by this is my knowledge of the
audience of the niche genre I chose has been
broadened vastly. I have also developed my skills in
choosing appropriate fonts for the style genre that I
chose, for instance M.A.D-Mad About Dance, I chose a
more serious, street/urban/graffiti style font rather
then big bubbly writing with would appeal more for a
children's cartoon magazine.
